NOTES ON LIST B: Serial numbers in the 100's and 200's indicate buses built in 1945, while buses with serial numbers in the 500's, 700's, and 800's indicate buses built in 1946. This reflects a number of events. First, it should be noted that the first 69 buses delivered were actually ordered in 1942 by Los Angeles Railway, which had previously ordered 35-foot Yellow Coach buses (TD4502/4505, covered in List A), and these began to arrive in July 1945. A second order of 23 buses was placed by LARy in 1944, and these began to arrive in August to replace buses from the 1942 order that had been transferred to Los Angeles Motor Coach, a joint subsidiary of LATL (and previously LARy) and Pacific Electric.
Prior to the arrival of the first two groups, a third order of TD4506's was placed by LATL, presumably due to a belief that the war with Japan would continue for several more years, and equipment would be needed to carry the record number of passengers that were thronging the LATL system; two actual missions over Japan in August 1945 would cut the conflict short. This, as well as the second LARy order, were delayed by a strike at General Motors, and deliveries would not resume until April 1946. The third group made up a block from 6301 to 6308, and those from the 6400's would also be transferred to LAMC in early 1949, but would return to LATL with the dissolution of LAMC in May 1949. Eventually, all would be regrouped in the 6200-6399 series with returnees filling in number gaps.
Also, the reader of this list will note that there are only 5 instances of numbers in serial order. A number of reasons have been theorized regarding this. An interview with one of the sources consulted for this listed noted that when the first of the LARy buses arrived in 1945, they were immediately placed in service, in grey primer paint, with fleet numbers chalked on, apparently in no particular order (unlike situations later encountered in New York City, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Philadelphia, where fleet numbers were pre-blocked by operating units, and small numbers were assigned to each facility at once to show off new buses). Considering the time of arrival, it may be understandable; World War II-related traffic was still at a high level, and the new operator, LATL, was in need for transit vehicles, so the first buses were immediately placed in service, after a possible cursory inspection. Curiously, this continued into the later orders of TD4506's delivered to LATL. -- MTG/082701.
