Berard was drafted first overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 1995 Entry Draft. He won the Calder Trophy in 1997 as top rookie in the NHL. His career was placed on hiatus when he took a stick in the eye from Marion Hossa of the Ottawa Senators. After sitting out the 2000/01 season, Berard signed with the Rangers in the off-season.
