PATTI SERVES ON JURY
[Published in the Asbury Park Press 1/18/05]
By KAREN SUDOL
FREEHOLD BUREAU
FREEHOLD -- Musician Patti Scialfa was a member of a jury that acquitted two Freehold men of aggravated assault following a trial last week.
After a two-day trial, jurors found 24-year-old Arthur Woolfolk and 19-year-old Chawn Givens not guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon upon Laneshia Wesby on Jan. 31.
In addition, the jury on Wednesday acquitted Givens of a terroristic threats charge against Wesby.
Both had been accused of trying to force Wesby, who was driving a car with passengers in it, off the road in Freehold. Givens was charged with threatening her on Bond Street before the car chase.
During jury selection before Superior Court Judge Francis P. DeStefano, Scialfa, an E Street Band guitarist/vocalist, told the court she was a musician and married to Bruce Springsteen.
After the trial, David Donnelly, Woolfolk's attorney, explaining his reasons for keeping Scialfa on the jury, said: "It was obvious from the beginning that she was fascinated by the whole process. She didn't miss a thing."
Givens' attorney, James Kinarney, said Scialfa appeared very interested in the case and seemed to be a fair juror.
Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor Sean Brennan said he is always searching for fair and impartial jurors. Scialfa seemed to have a good rapport with the rest of the potential jurors and appeared impartial, he said.

BRUCE JOINS PATTI IN NYC
Last week Patti warned the crowd in Asbury Park that Bruce wouldn't be at the next show in Boston
because as Bruce said "I got kids to watch".
But Patti didn't mention any of the shows after the Boston date.
When Patti made a stop in NYC last night after shows in Boston and Philly, Bruce was back onstage
at the Bowery Ballroom. Mr. Scialfa played guitar and did backing vocals on "As Long As I
(Can Be With You)" and "Love (STand Up)".
September 17 2004:
PATTI'S TOUR STARTS - BRUCE JOINS HER ONSTAGE
Patti Scialfa and her band -- still featuring E Streeters Nils Lofgren and Soozie Tyrell --
began their five-city tour last night, with a show on the Asbury Park boardwalk that evenly
mixed material from Rumble Doll and 23rd Street Lullaby.
And an "only in Asbury Park" treat for the Paramount Theatre crowd: special guest Mr. Patti Scialfa.
Springsteen shared a mic with Nils, playing a 12-string Telecaster on "As Long As I (Can Be With You)"
and taking an extended lead on "Love (Stand Up)." Patti told the audience that they shouldn't go on
the internet and say he'll be in Boston, because he won't. Bruce leaned into her mic and said,
"I got kids to watch!"
From there, Patti and her band will head to Boston, Philly, New York, and L.A.,
with a couple national TV appearances planned for the West coast stop.

PATTI AND BRUCE AT JOE GRUSHECKY'S GIG
At the Joe Grushecky & Soozie Tyrell show at the Stone Pony on Saturday night,
a certain Jersey Shore special guest was in the house: Springsteen who took the stage for an
hour-and-a-half rave-up. For his first performance of the summer, after hanging out offstage with
Sean Penn (the two reportedly attended soundcheck together), Bruce joined in midway through
Grushecky's set for "Never Be Enough Time."
Soloing like a madman as usual, he jammed with the Houserockers through the encores and the
show-closing "Murder Incorporated." Joe's son Johnny was there on guitar, after a warm-up set of
his own. Soozie and Patti Scialfa pitched in as well: Soozie (who closed her earlier set with a cover
of Bruce's "All or Nothin' At All") grabbed her fiddle for "Johnny 99," and Patti came in on
"Mustang Sally." Many of the usual suspects were in the set: "Homestead," "Pumping Iron," and
Bruce and Joe traded off vocals on their co-written "Code of Silence."

TV APPEARANCES
On Tuesday, June 15, Columbia Records will release 23rd Street Lullaby, the first album of new music from Patti Scialfa since her critically-acclaimed 1993 release, Rumble Doll. With all words and music written by Patti Scialfa, 23rd Street Lullaby is an intimate and powerful musical memoir combining imagery, empathy and honesty in twelve compelling tracks ranging from plaintive ballads to full-tilt rockers.
‘When you write a song based on a story from years past. It’s a way to go back and take a look where your compass was set,’ Patti Scialfa explains. ‘To see if you’re still on course, or if that setting is still relevant—that’s what’s interesting to me. On 23rd Street Lullaby, Scialfa delves into her personal history to create a sort of musical memoir of a time when life was wild and deep. She uses that period to frame struggles between faith and failure, strength and surrender, standing up and giving in. 23rd Street Lullaby is populated by lotharios, rebels, dreamers. Realists—but most of all, by Patti Scialfa herself, who sees all these characters in the most personal perspective.
23rd Street Lullaby is co-produced by Patti Scialfa and Steve Jordan (who recently served as musical director for the PBS series, "Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues," helmed Robert Cray's Best Contemporary Blues Album Grammy-winning Take Your Shoes Off, and has produced albums by Keith Richards, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and others). The album showcases an ensemble featuring guitarist Nils Lofgren, vocalist Soozie Tyrell, bassist Willie Weeks, keyboardist Clifford Carter, avant-garde guitarist Marc Ribot, cellist Jane Scarpantoni, drummer/co-producer Steve Jordan, and others.

HIT FACTORY HOSTS PATTI SCIALFA SHOWCASE
Springsteen joins in as Patti debuts new songs, 4/18
On Sunday, April 18, Patti Scialfa performed for a small audience at the Hit Factory in New York,
airing songs from her forthcoming 23rd Street Lullaby for the first time. Cameras were rolling,
filming the hour-and-a-half set for promotion purposes as the album's June 15 release approaches.
With a full band including Nils Lofgren on guitar, Soozie Tyrell on fiddle, Jane Scarpantoni on cello,
Steve Jordan on drums (as well as additional guitar, bass, keyboards and backup vocalists),
Patti focused mainly on the new material, playing most of the songs from the new album -- including
"Rose," "City Boys," "Yesterday's Child," "Stumbling to Bethlehem," "Each Other's Medicine,"
"State of Grace," "Young in the City," "Chelsea Avenue," and two takes on the title track.
She did touch on her first album, Rumble Doll, with "Spanish Dancer" and
"As Long as I (Can Be With You)." For the latter, as well as the new "Love (Stand Up)",
Springsteen joined her onstage on guitar and backing vocals.
(There were two shows on Sunday, an afternoon "rehearsal" and an evening performace,
and Springsteen guested on the same two songs at both shows.)
Scialfa also dedicated a song to Kristen Ann Carr, who would have celebrated her
33rd birthday that day.
Barbara Carr and Dave Marsh were among the attendees -- about 100 people in all,
in a cabaret setting -- also including contest winners
(from her new website, www.pattiscialfa.net), Jon Landau,
Bill Flannigan, Toby Scott, and Don Ienner.
No word yet on how extensive Patti's plans will be for promoting the record -- and whether the
great Nils Lofgren will be backing her on a regular basis -- but it looks like Max Weinberg
might take a turn too: according to www.rockontv.com, Scialfa is
booked on Late Night with Conan O'Brien on June 17.

PATTI SCIALFA'S SECOND ALBUM SCHEDULED FOR JUNE
Eleven years after Rumble Doll, it looks like Patti is finally taking her follow-up out of the oven.
Her sophomore album, titled 23rd Street Lullaby, is currently planned for a June 15 release on Columbia, with 12 tracks:
23rd Street Lullaby
You Can't Go Back
Rose
City Boys
Love (Stand Up)
Yesterday's Child
Stumbling to Bethlehem
Each Other's Medicine
Romeo
State of Grace
Chelsea Avenue
When You're Young in the City
Patti performed "Rose" and "Love (Stand Up)" at Holiday Shows in 2000 and 2001; "Romeo" was used in the 1998 Ed Burns movie No Looking Back. No word just yet on who might have guested on 23rd Street Lullaby, but in any case Patti fans can finally exhale.
