'79 FAMILY FLASHBACK:

Willie Stargell "Pops" was captain of The Family, driving the team to a pennant with his bat and leadership while awarding "Stargell Stars" to deserving teammates. In the World Series win, he set records with 25 total bases and seven extra-base hits (three homers, four doubles).

"Pittsburgh isn't fancy, but it is real. It's a working town and money doesn't come easy. I feel as much a part of this city as the cobblestone streets and the steel mills, people in this town expect an honest day's work, and I've given it to them for a long, long time."
Willie Stargell

Mail Call - Letters to the Editor
We have received a lot of emails recently complimenting our staff, suggesting material, and inquiring about the future of The Highlander. Here are just a few. (Please let us know how we can make your newsletter better. Email us your questions, comments and suggestions.)

I am writing to you for help in obtaining permission to copy a portion of the Baseball Almanac (World Series) section to our server. I am affiliated with a non-profit educational organization named Greenbush, which is located in Southeast Kansas. Our schools, the Community Learning Centers and our sister program VPL (Virtual Prescriptive Learning) use a computer-based curriculum software and additional curriculum that is teacher-generated. I am developing a basic course in Probability and Statistics and find that baseball keeps statistics about everything! By using the resources available to us on the Internet, we can give our students a much more rounded and exciting curriculum. We look forward to incorporating your material in our work. Thank you for your help in our endeavor to assist people in achieving a high school diploma. - Suzanne, Step Up Community Learning Center

Suzanne, we are honored that you have selected our work to appear as part of your Probability and Statistics curriculum. Nothing pleases us more than sharing the history of our great National Pastime and I can't think of a better forum than the educational community.

I loved the Amos Otis interview. Can't wait to read this month's with Jim Northrup. I sent out a Christmas note to the players that I know last December. I added a story about how my (now 18 month old) son Cooper picked up a signed Amos Otis card from daddy's desk and how he won't give it back. A week or so later I received a baseball card from Jim Northrup signed, "To Cooper, Jim Northrup". That should tell you what a great guy he is. Plus he likes to talk baseball. - Joe Gillespie / nBo Baseball

Thanks again Joe. Your contacts and Harold's interviewing skills have definitely taken The Highlander to the next level. Every time I call one of these ex-players to thank them for the interview, I feel like a little kid again, hanging over the infield fence trying to get an autograph at the ballpark. What a thrill!

First, let me begin by stating I am NOT a Yankees fan. In fact I hate them. I really-really hate them. However, I do enjoy some of your other articles (the non-Yankees ones) and found your site through a posting on our message board. If you wrote less about the Yankees, you would probably do better. More of us non-Yankee types would visit more often since your other team stuff is pretty good. Just a suggestion. - Mark (Mets fan)

Thanks for the compliment Mark... I think?
