BY FRED C. BAUMANN

The idea of a small dollhouse table to be used for the trick "Coins Through The Table" was David Roth to the best of my knowledge many years ago. To date there have been many alterations of methods and presentation.

My method is to use the wand. I got the idea from the Harry Potter movie. Although a magnet coin is used it must meet the conditions of the magnet field of hold and release. I must have searched hundred of dealers for the right coin to work which was not easy.

A magnet in the table must hold the coin and be released by a magnet in the wand without a tapping motion. The attraction and repelling forces of the magnets must be in balance to work flawlessly. I did a lot of research on this principle. See dollhouse kitchen table Fig. 1.

Fig. 1

Notice the tabletop thickness it is 1/8" thick and beveled. The magnet concealed in the center is the Radio Shack smallest round type, there is 1/16" padding to prevent noise when the coin is attracted to the magnet plus cuts down on the attraction forces. From your school days pulse and minus attract thus the coin stays in place. The magnet in the wand is also pulse and minus except like forces repel. When it is brought to the tabletop it release's the coin from the magnet in the table, thus a lesson in magnetism. I have total control over the wand angle it is about 45 degrees or less and it edges is only rotated about the center of the table.

Presentation: I state that maybe some of you have seen a magician do a trick called "Coins through the Table". I display the mini table and it usually gets a laugh. In my method I use a wand, see Fig. 5 and my hands will not touch the mini table. You will actually see an invisible coin penetrate the top of the mini table and become visible underneath. I remove five coins from my right trouser pocket (one being the magnet half) which I palm off as the others are tossed to the main table. I pick up the table with my left hand and display it letting the bottom being seen in a gesturing manner. At the same I get the magnet coin in the Morritt Position ready to be loaded see Fig. 2.

Fig. 2

I hold my hand at a slight angle so as not to flash the coin. I place the table above and over my right hand and drop it onto the finger letting it rest there, I give a slight upward motion and the coin becomes attracted to the magnet, see Fig. 3. I place the table down the coin is added unknown to the spectators.

Fig.3

I remove my hand from under the table and my palm is view as if nothing has happened. I developed this loading idea as opposed to placing coins on the table upside down. See Fig. 4A for a bottom view of the coin loaded. Fig. 4B is an upright position of the table with the coin loaded hidden from view all around.

I pick up the four coins with my right hand, and do the standard coin toss. (Holding one coin back in the classic palm) into the left hand. Then pick up the wand and gesture over the left hand and state, "I will remove one coin invisibly and make it become visible when I place it on the mini table. This being said and done, I place the tip of the wand about the center of the table, suddenly a coin is seen dropping to the surface of the main table. I then open my left hand to count off only three coins remain on to the main table. The next move is now to switch the palmed coin for the magnetic coin and get ready to reload back under the mini table. Any standard method may be used. By using both hands at the same time is good misdirection.

I pick up the mini table with the left, lay down the wand, as the magnetic coin is reveled. I pick it up for a moment to be displayed, then get it into the Morritt grip, at the same time drop the real coin from the palm, and push it forward with the tips of my fingers. Display the table as before at the same time load the coin again. At this point things can be the same or alter the tossing action to suit yourself for the other two coins. Keep the revealing action, and loading the same. Now for the last coin a good mystery is added I display the coin in my "LEFT HAND" and use The Dr. Robert's method to sleeve the coin, a real beautiful piece of magic. Over the years I developed to be able to use both hands to use the Robert's method to sleeve a coin.
