Valentine's Day Surprise
“I can’t believe it is Valentine’s Day already, in only two more days!” Kim thought to herself. She let her mind drift to the past few years on this day. A few years ago, her parents had set up a surprise “blind-date” for her. That had turned out to be a disaster after the first date. So they decided no more surprises of that sort for her. She couldn’t have been happier with that choice. She then thought to the gift she had gotten them this year.
“It has been so long since they have had any real time to themselves. I hope this enjoy this dinner!” she said to herself. She walked into her room and opened her top dresser draw to place the gift certificate inside. “I wonder what they came up with to get for me this year?” she asked herself out loud. “You’re never going to believe it. Even if I were to tell you now!” she heard someone say from her doorway.
“Oh god! Not another surprise?” she asked her mother. “Hey! We worked our asses off for this one. This is one thing I know, well hope, will make you one of the happiest people here on earth. I still myself cannot believe that we were able to pull it off.” Her mother answered in her defense. “So you say…” Kim replied smartly. Her mother snickered then walked away. “If she only knew,” Kim heard her mumble as she walked down the hall.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Valentine’s Day ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It had been killing her for the past two days. What could her parents have gotten for her that was so hard for them to get in the first place? What could they have gotten her that was so hard to get that they tried so hard to get it and didn’t give up on it? This was the big mystery. Kim wasn’t sure she was ready for their surprise. But she knew she’d die to find out what it was as well. She got out of bed that morning; she needed to get ready for work. She was out of bed and ready a full 15 minutes earlier than normal. She wanted to get out of her room to see what was waiting for her.
She walked to the other end of the house and waited for her “gift” to be given to her. To her surprise, she got nothing, and it wasn’t even mentioned. “Do I even want to know anymore?” she thought. She went through the rest of her daily routines that day. She went to work. Went through her day. She even had a small party that afternoon with her children in her class. This is what the real meaning of Valentine’s Day was. Just being with the people who you really loved. The people who mean the most to you. It wasn’t really about the gifts that you may receive. After work, she went home as usual. She helped get ready for dinner.
While she was helping her mother cook dinner, she decided to bring up this gift she was supposed to be getting. “So mom, I thought I was getting some huge surprise or whatever from you today?” she asked. “Well sweetie, you are. But I’m not sure exactly when it will happen!” “Huh?” Kim answered. Her mother just blew her off kindly by asking her to do something. Finally dinner was done. Everyone was getting situated at the table to eat. Just as Donna (Kim’s mother), sat at her place, the phone rang. She got a huge grin on her face and quickly got up to answer it.
“Hello?” “Yes it is.” “Yeah, she’s here.” “She has no idea about this. So she may not believe it at first. Excuse her actions!” “Wait, I thought that….” “Ohh… I see. Well she will be happy with this.” “Hold on, let me get her.” Her mother walked back to the table and said, “Kimberly, please go answer the phone. It is your surprise.” “My god mother. What have you done now?” Her stepfather started to laugh and yelled at her playfully to just answer the phone. Kim walked to the phone and picked it up. “Hello?” she called into the phone.
“Hey Kimberly! I am calling to wish you a very happy Valentine’s Day!” the person said into the phone. Kim thought a second. “Oh my god! Do you know who this sounds like? But there is no way!” she said to her caller. “Who do I sound like?” “Has anyone ever told you that you sound like AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys?” she laughed as she asked the question. ”And what makes you think it is not?” her caller replied. “There is no way my parents could pull this off. I am sorry. It was really sweet of you to call and all. Happy Valentine’s Day to you as well. I am going to go eat my dinner now. Buh~Bye!” Just as Kim was about to hang up her phone, she heard something that made her put the phone back to her ear.
“7 am… Thinking ‘bout you.. Wondering if the thoughts I am feeling you’re feeling too.. Like a newborn child soft to the touch…..” “Oh my god! This can’t be!!” “Believe it now lil’ lady?” he asked her. “Oh my god! There is no way anyone could imitate your singing. How the hell did they pull this off? How were they able to get you to call here??” AJ laughed into the phone. Then he explained the story. “Well we got a very interesting fan letter a few months ago. It was from your parents telling us about how much of a fan you are and all. And how you wanted to meet us so badly but it never seemed to work out. They explained about a Valentine Surprise that was a disaster a few years ago. And they wanted something to make up for that. Blah Blah Blah. They explained that Nick and I were your favorite Boys. And it would mean the world to them if we could send you a little card with an autograph or something. We got back in touch with your parents a few weeks ago. We decided to help them out and call you instead. Nick was supposed to be the one to call you but then he got different plans for this evening.”
She interrupted him here. “I cannot thank you enough for taking time out of your busy life to call me. This means the world to me. And it is okay about Nick. I don’t expect anyone least of all any of you to drop or change your plans for me. Please tell him I said thank you for wanting to though. It really does mean a lot to me.” AJ jumped in here. “Hey! If you are the type of person your parents made us believe you are, then this is my pleasure. And I would love it if one day we were able to actually meet you. Even if it is only one of us that gets the chance. You sound like someone who would make a great friend as well as a great fan!”
Just as she was about to reply to him, there was a knock on the front door. She heard her mother say that she would get it. A few seconds later, Kim heard her mother screaming. She ran to the door to see what it was all about. When she got to the door, she dropped the phone and fainted. She woke a few minutes later. She looked towards the door to see if he was still standing there. But he wasn’t. “This must be a dream!” she said to herself. Her mother handed her the phone back without saying a word. ‘Hello?” ‘Hey! I am guessing that he got there okay than?” “Oh my god! It was him? Nick is here?” Just then someone came up and sat beside her on the sofa.
She turned and looked at him. When she seen him, she started to cry hysterically. She knew she looked like a complete idiot. But she couldn’t help it. This was all too much for her. Her mother was still standing there. “I told you you’d like this one! Though I must say I only had part in the phone call. I didn’t know until I opened the door that this one would be here!” Kim looked at Nick again and was afraid of moving. Afraid to touch him. Afraid it was all a dream and would disappear. Kim then heard AJ screaming on the phone for someone to answer him. She put the phone to her ear again and asked him what he wanted. AJ asked to talk to Nick. She handed him the phone and said AJ wanted to talk to him.
“Just treat her right Kaos. She sounds like a really sweet person. Show her a nice time!” “I will. And you’re right. She does. Talk to later!” With those words Nick hung up the phone. Kim still had yet to say even a hello to Nick. Her mother noticed her nervousness and decided to leave the room. When she seen her mother leave, her tension built, but she was okay with it. “Oh my god! I am so sorry. I am here acting like a complete moron. I just soo cannot believe that you are here. Sitting beside me. In MY house!” Nick felt her tension and knew it reciprocated his own.
“Well I guess I should introduce myself huh?” he asked and she laughed at him. “Yeah. I am pretty sure I don’t know who you are!” she said in reply. This made him laugh. They slowly felt the tension lifting from them. “Hiya! I am Kimberly. As I am sure you must know.” “Hello Kimberly. I am Nick. As I am almost as sure you must know by now!” They both laughed again. “Don’t take this the wrong way Nick, but what are you doing here?” Nick looked at her and smiled. “Well AJ was supposed to explain the situation to you when he called. Did he not?” She told him how Nick was supposed to call but came up with other plans for the evening. That was all she was told.
“Ohh, he wanted to really surprise you than! He knew I was coming here. We thought we would give you a real treat. You sound like you really deserve this. Besides, your wonderful mother made you sound like someone I would love to meet. So yeah. I did make other plans for this evening. I came here in hopes that I could get you to go out to dinner with me possibly?” She stared at him. Was this really happening? “I, yeah, umm, sure. I’d love to go out to dinner with you. But are you sure? You don’t even know me. How do you know it would be safe to go out alone with me?” she asked him jokingly.
He laughed again. “I can sense things. And I can tell this is perfect. Nothing will happen that I won’t encourage. I promise that!” She wasn’t sure what he meant by this, but she was all for it. She told him she needed to go talk to her parents and then she would be all set to go. Just as she was about to leave the room, Nick came up beside her. “Mind if I talk to them? I can ask them if it is okay if you leave and all.” “You are too sweet!” Kim said to him. They walked to the dining room together. Nick spoke to her parents. Explaining his whole reasoning for being there. And finally asked them if it would okay with them if he took her out. Her mother yelled at him for asking such a stupid question.
After Kim went and quickly changed into a more decent outfit, they went out to his jeep. He helped her into the passenger side. Then ran to get into his side. He wasn’t to sure on a good place to eat. “I, I umm, I don’t really know around here to well. Do you have any suggestions on a place to eat?” Because she didn’t like sitting in restaurants to often herself, she wasn’t really sure either. He thought for a moment. “Do you have a beach around here?” She explained that there was one that was about 45 minutes away. That was the closest one around. He said okay and made plans. He drove around until he found a grocery store. He parked his jeep and asked her to wait for him. He put on sunglasses and a baseball cap as a small quick disguise. “I’ll be right be back!” he told her.
He jumped out of the jeep and ran into the store. Coming out a few minutes later with a handful of bags. He put the things into the back of the car and started to drive off, asking for directions to the beach. About an hour later, they were at their destination. The beach was getting darker because of it nearing dusk now. There was hardly anyone there at this time. Which was perfect. Nick took the bags out of the jeep and went and set up a spot on the sand for them, while Kim waited in the car. After he thought it looked perfect, he went to get her. He held his hands over her eyes to surprise her. When he got her to the spot, he slowly removed his hands.
She gasped when she seen what he had done. He had set up a little romantic picnic in the sand. He even included candles. It was very sweet. She looked at him and smiled the biggest smile she had given him all night. This made his heart flutter. She had such a cute smile he thought. He helped her sit down. They sat and ate the little things he had bought, and talked for a while. After an hour had passed, Nick stood up. He reached over and grabbed her hand to help her up. She looked at him, unsure as to what he wanted. He asked her, “Would you mind walking with me along the water barefoot, under the stars?” She again smiled brightly, “I have no problem with that!” She reached down to undo her sandals as Nick removed his sneakers.
They continued talking as they walked along the beach. Finally they turned and headed back to their things. When they got there, Nick looked at her. He wanted to do. He had to do it, just once. He leaned over to be closer to her. He whispered to her, “Remember, nothing happens that I don’t want to happen!” When she turned to look at him and question his meaning, he gently kissed her. “This girl is more than anything I could have imagined!” he thought to himself. She was taken aback by his movement. She was in utter awe. But she was blissfully happy too. They sat quietly for a little while before Nick suggested he bring her home. The drive home was in silence. Neither knew what to say. Both were not sure as to how the other was thinking or feeling at the time.
When they reached her house, Nick walked her to her door. “Thank you so much Nick! I really had a great time. And it was a dream come true to be able to meet you finally. I don’t know how to thank you!” Nick smiled at her. “Thank you as well. Doing what we did tonight, that was my idea of the perfect first date. A picnic at dusk on the beach. Then walking along the ocean line barefoot under the stars. And I have never been able to do that with anyone. And that is what I want this to be. A first date. I hope that will not be a problem with you?” She stared at him once again this evening. “A problem? Nick are you sure? I cannot believe this is happening. Oh my god!” she couldn’t believe this. Nick leaned over again and kissed her softly.
He then reached over and grabbed her hand. He brought it to his lips to kiss her palm softly, tickling her. This made her laugh. “That is one of the things I love about you. Your laugh. Your smile. That cute little giggle you have!” She blushed at his words. He seemed to know all the right things to say to her. Suddenly he heard a beeping noise from his front pocket. He pulled out his beeper. “Shit! It has been almost 5 hours I have been with her already. I gotta get going. I don’t want to do this. I don’t want to leave her!” he thought to himself.
He looked her in the eyes and asked her to sit with him. He sat on her front porch and pulled her onto his lap. She giggled when he did this. “Nick, what are you doing?” “I am apologizing for what I am about to do.” She turned and looked him directly in the eyes. “What are you going to do?” she asked him. Not exactly sure what to expect from him now.
“I am sorry to just drop and run like this. But I really need to get back with the guys now. I really didn’t have the time to do this. But I had to. I had to meet you. And I wanted it to be this day. I had to meet you so badly. Here is my cell number. Call me anytime day or night. I will call you as often as I can. And it will definitely be soon so we can make plans to get together again. Besides, all the other guys want to meet you as well.”
She sat there and stared at him. She couldn’t believe it was over. It was ending. Her night filled with dreams. But she knew it would end sometime. She just wasn’t prepared for it. “I understand,” she said as she climbed off of his lap. “It is okay though. I was lucky enough to get this one chance to be with you. That means more to me than anything!” Nick quietly reminded her that this was the first of many nights.
She smiled at the enthusiasm he showed when he said it.
Kim kissed him once more, then watched him walk away from her. She waited until he was out of sight before she went into her house. Her parents were still awake. She sat and told them all that had happened while she was out. And she told them that this was one surprise she was grateful for. And she wasn’t sure she’d know how to EVER repay them for it.
