From across the bar, AJ slumped in his chair. "I'm gonna marry that girl," he said.
Nick laughed. "In your dreams, AJ...that girl is heaven sent."
"OK well if I can't marry her I'll hit on her." AJ jumped out of his seat and started walking over to her.
"He's drunk," Kevin stated the obvious.
"Someone should really go and get him," Howie added.
"I nominate Brian," Nick said.
"You guys are horrible. Fine, but you owe me." Brian stood up and walked after AJ.
AJ reached the girl and tapped her on the shoulder. She turned around and AJ fell to his knees.
"Will you marry me?" He said, just as Brian reached him and shoved him over to the floor. "Ouch."
Brian turned to the girl. "I'm sorry, he's a little - "
"I'm drunk! I'm intoxicated! I'm a little shitty! I'm....I'm..."
"Inebriated?" The girl offered.
AJ nodded approvingly. "I like her," he said, before stumbling back to the guy's table.
Brian turned to the girl again. "I'm really sorry about that."
The girl laughed. "It's no problem."
Just then AJ shouted from across the room, "ARE YOU DRUNK, TOO?"
"Nope, sorry...I'm the designated driver," She said back.
"Hey so am I." Brian stuck out his hand. "Brian Littrell."
She took his hand. "Kate Donovan, this is Sara and Casey nice to meet yo - wait... what's your name again?"
"Brian Littrell."
"Oh my God...." She turned to a girl sitting to her right. "Pass me a vodka, Sara," She said.
"Hey, I thought you were the designated driver?"
"Oh yeah. Someone pass me a seltzer water." Brian laughed. "So you're Brian. And let me guess, your four friends over there are Nick, Howie, AJ and Kevin."
"Yup."
Kate turned to her friends. "Guys, meet the Backstreet Boys."
"I guess you found me out. Don't let that stop you from letting me buy you a drink." Brian said. Kate raised her eyes. "Seltzer water, of course." He added.
Kate laughed a little, and allowed Brian to pull her out of her seat. "That would be nice," she decided. As they walked to the bar, Sara and Casey, couldn't help but stare at the other Backstreet Boys.
"I dare you to go hit on Nick," Sara said, and Casey turned to look at her.
"No way I'm gonna hit on a millionaire superstar!"
"Yeah, but he may hit on you," Sara said, and glanced around Casey to Nick, who was walking straight to Casey. He reached her and tapped her on the shoulder. Casey turned around.
"You wanna dance?" He said. Casey nodded dreamily, and he led her out of her seat to the dance floor.
Sara was all alone until Howie motioned for her to come sit with him. And she did, gladly.
At the bar, Kate was sipping her water, and Brian was watching her. "Do you enjoy watching me drink?" She asked him.
"You're right, this is boring...we should do something. Let's dance." He took her hand and lead her to the dance floor. He held her close, and after a few songs her head dropped onto his shoulder, and his grip around her tightened. He smelt her hair, and the scent of strawberries lingered close to her.
After the fifth of sixth song had ended, Brian tapped her on the shoulder, and Kate lifted her head up to meet his gaze. "Want to go for a drive?" He asked.
"I thought you were the designated driver for the others?"
"Well Nick can't drink anyway, so he can drive them."
"Okay...just one more song," She leaned her head back to his shoulder, and he held her tight again.
After the song was over, Kate stepped away from Brian and said, "Want to go now?"
"Sure...give me a minute, okay?" He asked.
"I'll get my stuff." She walked back to her table, and Brian walked over to Kevin.
"Man, I need a big favor...." Brian said.
"You get one dent in that car I kill you," Kevin answered, tossing him the keys. Brian jokingly blew him a kiss. He then walked over to the door, where Kate was standing. He took off his jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders. He glanced over at Nick and Nick winked at him. Brian smiled.
Kate and Brian walked out the door to Kevin's Mercedes. Brian opened the door for her, saw her in, and then walked around to his side. He opened the door and sat down. He was about to start the car when there was a sudden pounding on Kate's window.
"Stay here, I'll be right back," he said, and he opened his door and got out. Standing there were a group of girls, all screaming like maniacs and holding out pens and pictures to be signed.
Brian tried to control his temper, but it surged through him like a current of electricity. He was about to open his mouth and scream at them all when Nick came running out of the bar .
"Hey girls! Over here! I'm the cute one!" Nick yelled.
When the girls saw him they ran over to them, and Brian mouthed a thank you to Nick before jumping in the car and speeding off.
The car was parked in front of an overlook to the whole city. Kate and Brian were lying down on the hood of the car, watching for shooting stars.
"I'm really sorry that happened, Kate," He said.
"No," She said, sitting up, "It wasn't your fault."
"But there's something else..."
"Well..."
Brian sat up. "What?"
"I just realized something. It's like I've woken up from a dream and came to realize I wasn't really dreaming. You're a Backstreet Boy."
"That doesn't change who I am. It doesn't mean I don't get to go out on dates. It just means sometimes people think I'm more than a human being. But that's all I am. Trust me."
"I'm not saying you're not a regular person. I'm saying that you have something every person wants, whether they admit to it or not."
"What's that?"
"Fame."
Brian laughed, and turned to her. "Fame isn't all that it's cracked up to be."
"I'm beginning to see that."
Brian jumped down from the car. He walked some ways to the cliff's edge. Then he turned back to her. "That's usually how my dates end. 'Sorry Brian, we thought it was all fun and games. Hey before I go, can I have an autograph?' "
"That's not how this date is going to end. I'm going to give you my phone number, you're going to walk me to my door and you're going to kiss me good night."
Brian suddenly laughed then, but it was a hurt laugh. "I've never gotten to that part before. I haven't kissed a girl in ages."
Kate jumped down from the hood of the car and walked over to Brian. She placed her hands around his neck. "If your going to kiss me good night you're going to have to be good, you know. You may need some practice."
Brian just stared at her. God, she's so beautiful, he thought. And then he cleared his mind of all things. He leaned closer to her and tilted his head a little. Their lips met and he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her to him. It was magic. After a moment Kate pulled away and when Brian looked at her he could have sworn he saw her eyes sparkle a little.
"If you kiss every girl like that I have a lot of competition," Kate finally said.
Brian couldn't talk. He had never in his life known a kiss so sweet, so pure. He kept his arms around her waist, and they both just stared into eachothers eyes. Then a breeze blew sudden cold air at them, and Kate shivered.
"It's getting cold," Kate said. "You wanna drive me home now? I'm kinda hoping for another kiss." Brian nodded, and led her back to the car.
