Phi Beta Sugma Fraternity Incorporated, was founded, on January 9, 1914 at Howard University. By three men Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and Honorable Charles I. Brown. They based the fraternity on the principles of brotherhood, scholarship, and service. The founders deeply wished to create an organization that viewed itself "apart of" rather than "apart from" the general community. They believed each potential member should be judged on his own merits rather than family background or affluence, without regard of race, nationality, color of skin, or texture of hair.

Today there are over 100,000 members and 700 chapters across the U.S., Virgin Islands, Gaum, and Africa. We take pride in having a unique link with our African culture in that our fraternity was based on African heritage. In addition to being based on African heritage our fraternity was the first Black Greek Letter Organization to establish chapters in Africa, and is refered to as the fraternity of African Presidents, Princes and Kings.

The greatness of Sigma is measured in terms of ideals and its practices. Such as our motto,"Culture For Service; Service For Humanity",and our three national programs Bigger Better Business, Education, and Social Action. We take pride in two very special days: Carver's Day(In remembrance of brother George Washington Carver) and Founder's Day.
