These Seven all hail from different regions of Ohio; Columbus (ESP, Mello, Qua’Zay Populous, and Ookie), Cincinnati (Oral B), Youngstown (L-DOG), Cleveland/Akron (Funk Monkey). ESP and Qua’Zay Populous are brother and the cousins of Mello and Ookie. Oral B, Funk Monkey and Qua’Zay met in college at The University of Akron. Seven is the complete number, the seventh letter of the alphabet “G.” “G” can stand for a lot of things Gold and God. In this case, just like the “G” in L-dog, its stands for Gifted.
THE STARTING LINE UP:
Every member brings a different style to the playing field. Qua’Zay (the Quarterback) is tricky with the word play, “You better run like snot dummy/ its not funny/ the way I rap you to death like a Mummy/.” The leader of the team, keeping everyone together. Slick delivery, if you don’t pay attention you might miss some fascinating lyrics: “I Broke Backs on Recording contracts/ females blow in my ear like a Sax/ for C-notes I relax/.” Meanwhile his younger brother ESP (the Wide Receiver) hits you with a quick flow and catchy metaphors. Emil describes his style in “Don’t step 2 Us” ‘every time you flow/ I find it funny like hitting my elbow/ I’m Arcane! Look it up in the dictionary/ Poetically SPRAY you like OCEAN Cranberry/.” Oral B (the Running Back) brings smooth nonchalant verbal attack I think he says is best “Oral B, here to add some spice into the recipe, got you all open like ‘ha, open says-a-me.” Also Orally known for singing females into his arms, not only lyrically talented, but he can carry a few notes. L-Dog (Special Teams), the “Wolverine of this Varsity Team” is what he says, “small and unpredictable, part man, mouton and mystical.” Deep voice, relaxed delivery, the calmest of the crew. Ookie known as the “2Pac” of the bunch. Ookie spits that street talk “Cats be talking about they be busting gats daily/ But I’m packing a tre-eighty so that none of the cats Fade me/.” Ookie is the cousin of Mello, ESP, and Populous. He raps about his hard street life as a gangster. Currently suspended from the team for unnecessary roughness (serving a bid in an Ohio Correctional Institution). Mello, is just that, but don’t let his calm appearance fool you. Stop and go type flow, harsh words said softly, sort of reminds you of the Godfather. Mello lets all the other cats that he is “the Mello, the Melloman/ leave a trail of corpse when the glock is in my hand/.” Funk Monkey is the Beatman. He sets the pre-game music and sets up the playing field (along with Qua’Zay Populous and Oral B). The Monkey comes with a variety of sounds, jazz, House, Techno to R&B, to please all ear drums.
The sounds of the Varsity crew were on halt due to numerous variables, Ookie’s incarceration, finishing college, and financial. Oral B and Qua’Zay were in an Apollo showcase in Akron the summer of 1997, but did not perform due to a fight breaking out. Through all these troubles, Qua’Zay Populous will be releasing his solo album in March of 2000. The first Album to drop will be Qua’Zay Populous’ “Looks can B deceiving.” The Varsity Lyrics crew will all appear (with the exception of Ookie and Mello) on this Album. The first singles are "ESP & POP" and “Don’t step 2 us” featuring ESP and L-Dog. ~The crew will be performing on July 7th 11am-2pm @ The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.
We can perform at your venue!
