Look On
Loneliness creeps
along your solitary form.
Eyes blankly look on,
waiting for the peaceful black,
Once held answers float away
on a river of regret.
As all things must end, so must you.
Comfort is found in nothing,
each breath pierces silence.
Distant drops of water
shatter on forgotten dishes.
Youthful wishes also shatter,
too many mistakes weigh you down.
What legacy will be left
after it battles your shame?
The head turns aside for
one final glance at the scribbling.
Why should they accept reasons
that you can not accept yourself?
Quite a list you left behind,
but who's was it really?
Your true reason...fear.
Eyelids descend like the setting sun
as the pill shaped good-bye consumes you.
All the feeling has left your legs
replaced by a calm numb.
Soon the numbness will
cover like a blanket.
Suffocate like a pillow
held tightly over your face.
From the first crayon
to the first kiss,
film strip memories pass quickly
frame by frame.
Momentary visions of the destiny
you will never grasp.
Breath so slow you hear the echo of your heart
beating against your skull.
Like the rooster crow,
a phone ring breaks the stillness.
Familiar voice on the machine
begging you not to go.
You mentally reach out,
but your hand does not.
It is too late for mind changes
or 4-square do overs.
The numbness has won
and grasps the heart.
One last weak breath
and nothing follows.
A single tear lingers on your cheek
as your eyes still look on.
