to Nick and Nina Clooney
in Lexington, KY
Born into a real showbiz family, he appeared early on his father’s various TV shows, capturing
the audience with his antics. Nick Clooney, journalist and TV personality in the Cincinnati
area, often took the whole family with him to publicity functions and George played his part.
He got a tryout with his beloved Cincinnati Reds, only to find that the star player
for the little high school team wasn’t quite up to big league quality.
A stint at Northern Kentucky University convinced him that he wasn’t too happy in academia
either and he held a series of uninspiring jobs. Following his father into the broadcasting
field was looming as a very real possibility and his aim in that direction began to take focus.
Then his uncle, actor Jose Ferrer, along with two of his sons – Miguel and Rafael – came to
Kentucky to make a film about horse racing and the drifting young cousin was given a minor
role in the movie. And They’re Off was never released, but George had found what he wanted
to do. Much to his father’s dismay . . .
Nick knew the odds of making it in that particular profession and didn’t want to see his son
endure the cruel rejections he felt sure he would encounter. He wanted him to finish college,
have something to fall back on,to which George replied, If I have something to fall back on,
I’ll fall back.
And then he was off. In a rusty 1976 Monte Carlo that miraculously made it across country a
nd with $300 in his pocket, he hit Hollywood.
Fail-Safe, George’s own project, his favorite film of all time, his idea to do it like the old live
Playhouse 90 productions. As Les Moonves, president of CBS, said, "We're always looking for
'event-TV'. George Clooney in a great piece of material done live? If that ain't an event,
I don't know what is." Here again, the fact that CBS backed such an innovative project
embodies the growing confidence the powers that be have in George.
