Over 30 years ago research showed that inhaling one breath of coal tar (known to the roofing industry as pitch) was the equivalent of inhaling one hundred cigarettes. The government in its infinite wisdom wants to move America into a smokeless society however, it seems impossible to convince them that coal tar pitch should be outlawed. There are several alternatives on the market today, rubber, PVC's,and many combination's.

Why do they allow a product to be used that causes roofers to have a life expectancy of under 60 years? Because the commercial roofing trade is a poor white, black, and Hispanic people trade.

Does the U.S. Government really believe that these people are expendable, or is it that they believe that these people do not deserve to grow old with the rest of the world.

Most union roofers cannot retire until they reach the age of 58 this age is for early retirement and is at a reduced rate. One out of a thousand that retire at this early age will live to collect his pension for ten years, the rest will die of black lung, or another of lung diseases caused by breathing tar.

This has the effect of making the union pension funds very rich and saves the government from paying benefits to those who have spent as much as forty years in the labor force.
