I Miss You

by: M.L. Cavanaugh

Autumn's worn leaves glide gracefully to the ground
The frigid wind rustles my hair, burns my cheeks
As I quicken my pace,
The dried leaves crunching beneath my shoes.
My eyes not focused on the street before me,
but somewhere farther in the distance
Locked on a future that doesn't yet exist

I see you so clearly there
Hand and hand
you walk with me
down this old brick sidewalk,
Smiling into the frigid wind
You scold me into hurrying
because you are cold, anxious to be where it is warm.
To be where I can make you warmer.

You break the contact with my hand,
Running ahead, you turn to throw me
A grin that turns my heart in my chest

I love you,
my voice reaches you,
And you stop,
Your feet suddenly buried in the colorful leaves.
I reach you, pulling your face close to mine.
Our warm breathing dulling the cold wind
My lips touch yours
Capturing your essence, your soul.

I quicken my pace again,
Longing for this future place to be real
Wanting to hear your voice whisper
You love me,
even if it's only on the other end of a phone.
It brings the reality home to me.
The reality of you.
