Voyager Episode Review: Coda

Primary Characters

Coda begins with Janeway and Chakotay repeating a discussion of "Talent Night" (which sounds like it would have been great to see) over and over. Every time, a series of events, ending in the death of Captain Janeway occurs until finally she's dead for good. Janeway is greeted by her father, there to help her come into the afterlife. She watches them grieve at her memorial service. Eventually, Janeway realizes that this man is not a figment of her imagination, but an alien being. She fights him off and comes back to life (which was possible since she was actually only at the moment just before death). Now, the critique. First, the positive points. After realizing that Janeway is not going to come back by his efforts alone, Robert Beltran gives a very good performance. Roxanne Dawson and Garrett Wang both deliver their mournful speeches very well. In parts of the episode, Kate Mulgrew is quite good. However.... In some of the scenes, particularly when dying and rasping for breath, she is HORRIBLE! Maybe that's a bit severe. Suffice it to say, it wasn't pretty. And so, "Coda" gets an 8. The story got a little confusing toward the end, and the death scenes were hard to take. But other than that, it was a quality episode.
