The Deities

The Wiccan religion worships two deities, the Goddess and the God. There is not, however, any set pair of Godesses and Gods that must be worshiped. For instance, one coven (or Solitary practitioner) may worship Athena and Apollo, while another may worship Diana and Thor.

The Goddess is known as the Universal Mother. All of Nature is born of Her. She is Nature. The Goddess has three aspects to her: the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone. She represents both life and death. She is the symbol of fertility, love, and abundance. She is represented in the Moon, the seas, and the new growth of spring.

She is symbolized in the cauldron, cup, mirror, neclace, seashell, pearls, silver, emeralds, and many others. She rules the Moon, the Earth, and the seas.

Some of the animals used to represent Her are the rabbit, cat, dog, bat, cow, dolphin, lion, horse, spider, and bee, among many others as well.

She has been shown as a huntress, running with Her dogs, a Mother laden with child, a weaver, and a Crone walking in the moonlight while taking care of the lost and forlorn.

The God is equal to the Goddess. Neither one is more important than the other. They are equal. He is represented on the Sun, which is the source of all life, for without the Sun, we would not exist. He is ruler of the wild forest, where no man hasgone before, the deserts, the mountains, and the stars, which are distant suns.

He is represented by the sword, horns, spear, candle, gold, sickle, arrows, wand, and the knife, among many more.

His sacred animals are the bull, snake, stag, dragon, wolf, boar, eagle, and falcon, amongst many others.
