Nothing and Everything at Once

Chapter 8

"BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!" The alarm clock rang at 5:30. "Damn alarm clock." Trisha groaned and rolled over onto her side. Soon, she'd fallen asleep once more.

"TRISH!"

"What?" Trisha groggily turned to face her angry mother.

"It's 7:10! You have to be at school in 20 minutes! What the hell were you doing?"

"Sleeping, I'm so sorry, Mom."

"Sorry? Sorry, doesn't even begin to cover things. I'm going to be late for work now."

"That's why we need another car."

"WE CAN'T AFFORD ANOTHER CAR! WE CAN'T AFFORD ANYTHING! Why do you think that we live in this shit hole, excuse for an apartment? Why do you think I work 10 fucking hours a day? I CAN'T AFFORD ANY OF THIS! I can't afford the life I want, and I can’t afford this stress. And most of all, I can't afford to miss work. So hurry up and get out of bed! We're leaving in 10 minutes."

"Trish are you okay?" Sarene stared at her friend across the cafeteria table.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Don't worry about it."

"Are you sure?"

"I'M FINE OK! Drop it. I’m just not having that great of a day."

"Geeze, calm down. Is it that time of month or something?"

"No, I just had to rush out the door this morning, and my mom yelled at me, and I don’t know, maybe I forgot ..."

"Forgot what?"

"My medication."

"Oh."

Trisha grimaced, "Yeah, no kidding."

Trish,

I'm sorry about yelling at you this morning. But could you please do me a favor and run out and get me another ink cartridge, ours ran out this morning, and get some paper too.

I appreciate it,
Mom

"What, am I her slave or something?" Trish sighed and grabbed the money her mother had left her for the bus, a faint memory of what happened the last time she went on an errand for her mother, playing in her mind.
