My Son's Story

My son was born in April of 1998 with bilateral club foot. For those of you who are uncertain as to what exactly that is...it means, in layman's terms, that both of his feet are turned inward and up towards the inner leg facing one another. He is now six months old and, as you can see in the picture, when he pulls himself to a standing position he is nearly standing on the top of his feet rather than the bottom. Not a pretty sight. It does not seem to bother him, in fact I think it bothers me more.

At the age of 6 days he was put into his first casts. These casts were changed 5 days later with no evidence of improvement. Fifteen days later they were changed again with very good results. His left foot was almost completely straight...(YIPEE). On our next visit about two weeks later only the right cast was removed. This was an attempt to give his left foot a better chance of catching up. However when we went back the following week to have them both replaced the results were quite different than what we were expecting. The left foot had not further improved. Both feet were very stiff and refused to flex out into an even near normal position. The Doctor decided to give one more week of casting a try. The following week, it was determined that casting was doing nothing for him. He got his last cast removed on June 8th.

Since then we have waited and hoped that something other than surgery would come up as an option. No such luck. He is scheduled to have surgery on October 29th and November 12th. Hopefully he will not need any additional surgery later on.

So, you say..."It can be fixed, big deal!"
Yes, it can be fixed and for that I am grateful.
It's the little things that hit home a bit harder. Parents of children with clubfoot can all relate to this. The publics reaction when you carry your PERFECT beautiful newborn out for the first time and have someone point out to you that something's not so "perfect". The cute little shoes that he will never wear...Sponge baths for months on end. (Do you realize the magnitude of that one once they start eating baby food?!!)... Watching him as he stands for the first time...Listening to the screams as his feet are casted only to be removed the following week and recasted over and over...trying to buy those cute outfits, they just don't fit right with those bulky casts...
