Athletics Gordon Smyth, Chairman
It seems like yesterday that we were braving the cold spring weather and dodging puddles on soggy infields. It's hard to believe that our baseball season has come to an end.
This year we had a C-middle, a D-middle, D-1 and a large "T-BALL" program. Judging from the smiles on our players, I'd say we had a GREAT season! All of our boys and girls on all of our teams played with a lot of heart!
We would particularly like to congratulate the players of our D-Middle team who finished the regular season with a 12-0 record and a 15-1 overall record. They finished in third place at the Our Lady of Victory Tournament losing to a "stacked" Delhi White Eagles team by a score of 8-7. As part of this tournament, Curtis Siler won the Home Run Derby!
Congratulations also to our baseball Espelage Trophy winners Brandon Carson, Alex Schmieg, Jeffry Muse and Jonathan Schrand. For those who are not aware, the Espelage Award is given to the player who tries the hardest, does what is requested and has an exemplary attitue. It is a once in a lifetime award and is most coveted.
Soccer season officially gets underway on Saturday/Sunday August 26-27th. This year we are fielding nine teams from ages 6-13 as well as serveral "lollipop" (ages 4-5) teams. We still need 6-7 year old girls to complete our rosters
Speaking of teams and rosters, every year we get requests from parents to have their children play on a certain team so they can be with their friend/cousin/baby sitter's child. In general we have to say 'no' to these requests. This is due to a fundamental S.A.Y principal that players must be assigned to teams on a random basis. All new players and players moving from one level to the next are required to be placed in a blind draw. This assignment method is fundamental to S.A.Y. and is an attempt to prevent teams from stacking their rosters.
The only exceptions to the blind draw procedure is accorded to the siblings, children of the head coach and to one assistant coach.
We hope the above clarifies the situation. If you have any questions or comments, please call either Lou Winston at 347-0589 or Gordon Smyth at 481-2031. They will be happy to discuss this or other concerns with you.
