Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Bedspread Cotton, Art. B.504:   1 ball White; or

J & P Coat's or Clark's O.N.T. Pearl Cotton, Art. A. or B.19, Size 5:   4 balls of White.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

6 yards of bittersweet grosgrain ribbon, 1/2 inch wide.

Placemat measures 12 1/2 x 18 inches.

Starting at long side make a chain 19 inches long.

1st row:  D tr in 10th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, d tr in next ch.  Repeat from * across until row measures 15 1/2 inches.  Cut off remaining ch.   Ch 5, turn.

2nd row:  Skip first d tr, * dc in next d tr, ch 2.  Repeat from * across, ending with ch 2, skip 2 ch of turning chain, dc in next ch.  Ch 5, turn.

3rd row:  Skip first dc, * dc in next dc, ch 2.  Repeat from * across, ending with ch 2, skip 2 ch of turning ch, dc in next ch.  Ch 7, turn.

4th row:  .Skip first dc, * d tr in next dc, ch 2.  Repeat from * across, ending with ch 2, skip 2 ch of turning ch, d tr in next ch.  Ch 5, turn.

Repeat 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rows, until piece measures 11 inches, ending with 4th row.  Do not break off.  Ch 5, turn.

BORDER . . . 1st rnd:  Work in pattern across, ending with ch 2, skip 2 ch of turning chain, in next ch make dc, ch 5, dc (corner made); *ch 2, dc in next sp, (ch 2, dc at base of next st) 3 times.  Repeat from * across, working next corner as previous corner was worked.  Complete other sides and corners the same way, ending with dc in same place as starting chain, ch 2, dc in 3rd ch of starting ch.

2nd rnd:  Ch 8, dc in last dc made, *ch 2, dc in next dc.  Repeat from * around, making dc, ch 5 and dc in center ch at each corner.  Join.

3rd rnd:  Sc in same place as sl st, 7 sc in next sp, * sc in next sp.  Repeat from * around, making 7 sc in next sp, *sc in next dc, 2 sc in next sp.  Repeat from * around, making 7 sc in each corner sp.  Join and break off.

Starch lightly and press.  Cut a strip of ribbon slightly longer than d-tr spaces.  Lace ribbon through sps.  Sew ends securely.  Lace another piece of ribbon through next row of sps, working under bar of d tr that was worked over previously.  Sew ends securely.  Complete all d tr rows the same way.
