Mr. Hollinger will fly from Columbus, Ohio to Skagway, Alaska on Thursday, September 23, 1999. He's going to Skagway as a participant in the ARCTIC Project. The ARCTIC Project pairs teachers from Central Ohio with teachers from Alaska to learn more about the integration of educational technology (computers and more) into the classroom.
While in Skagway Mr. Hollinger will be working with Mr. Frank Pickett, a teacher at Skagway School. Mr. Pickett, who spent five months studying educational technology in Delaware, teaches high school chemistry, physical science, biology and marine biology. Mr. Pickett and his students even operate a salmon hatchery.
During his visit to Skagway School Mr. Hollinger will learn more about how teachers there, including Mr. Pickett, are integrating technology into their teaching. Mr. Hollinger will also share some of the things he is doing in his classroom. One of the things Mr. Hollinger hopes to do while at Skagway School is to explore the possibility of connecting students there with students at Willis Middle School and other Delaware schools through collaborative projects.
Mr. Hollinger also plans to do some exploring while in Skagway. Skagway had its beginnings in 1897 with the cries of "Gold! Gold in the Klondike!" All through the summer and into the winter of 1897-98, stampeders poured into the newly created Alaskan tent and shack towns of Skagway and Dyea - jumping off points for the 600 mile trek to the Klondike goldfields.(National Park Service) Skagway and its environs remain rich in gold rush history and Mr. Hollinger plans to explore the historic sites and send reports and pictures back to his students. There's lots to do in Skagway.
Skagway is located in a beautiful region of Alaska known as Southeast. Southeast Alaska is located on Alaska's panhandle. It is a region rich in natural and culture history and incredible beauty.
Mr. Hollinger looks forward to sharing his trip with his students through this website. It is his hope that through their virtual journey to Alaska, his students will be able to envision a future when they will visit Alaska in reality.
