Night Bobber

Fishing for big catfish often means fishing at night when the big cats are more active. If you fish the bottom for cats the darkness is not a problem, but if you are like myself you like to suspend a live bluegill (or other small baitfish) beneath a big balsa slip floater with a lead bottom. These floats not only keep your bait from swimming into bottom debris and causing a snag, they also let you cast incredible distances thanks to the lead bottom. The problem with these floats is you can't see them at night. To correct this try the following:

  • Purchase a few "cyalume light sticks" (1.5"long x .25" dia. works well for me) at your local camping - fishing supply store.
  • Place a "cyalume" lightstick on the top of the bobber using a rubberband or electrical tape, or a twist-tie.
  • Make sure that the top of the light stick is flush with the top of the bobber.

(to prevent the line from becoming tangled in it)

  • Adjust its position during use for maximum visibility.

The light stick will last most of the night. It will enable you to see your bobber in the dark. I have caught a lot of catfish using this "night bobber". It is quite a sight to see the bobber leave a trail of green light as it goes under the waters surface.
