Jacob's Story
If anyone has a story about the loss of a child, I would love to add it here. Just e-mail me the story.

When most of us hear of a pregnancy, whether it is ours or another's, we think of a Gerber baby, fresh from a bath, smelling of powder and lotion, and wrapped in a terry cloth towel. We think of the child celebrating at a 1st birthday party, going to kindergarten, and playing dress up or Little League. We wonder if the child will have his mothers nose or fathers curly hair.

Dreams and images are part of every pregnancy, but not every dream comes true. More often than most of us ever imagine, pregnancies do not always end happily ever after.

Each year, over half a million dreams are shattered. Out of 3.3 million babies born alive, some 30,000 die during the first 28 days. Another 33,000 babies are stillborn. Miscarriage occurs in 15 to 20 percent of pregnancies, while ectopic pregnancy ocurs in 1 percent.

It is little comfort to grieving parents that infant mortality is much less than it was at the turn of the century when one out of ten babies died. Parents cannot cuddle statistics. All that matters to a parent whose baby has died is that infant was their child...

This is part of the introduction from a very good book that was given to us by our doctor, after the death of Jacob. The book is called When a Baby Dies.
