WILLIAM IS NEW ETON SWIMMING CAPTAIN
Prince William has been appointed captain of Eton's swimming team for his final school year.
From September, the teenage prince will be Joint Keeper of Swimming at the exclusive public school, St James's Palace has confirmed. The appointment recognises 16-year-old William's strength in the sport which his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, also loved.
Along with the Prince of Wales, Diana encouraged William to develop his swimming skills and he showed great promise from an early age. He is also a member of Eton's water polo team.
The appointment was made by Eton College's swimming master in consultation will the school's swimming coaches.
William will help with team selection, organising galas, training younger boys, keeping swimming records and greeting visiting teams. He will also play a part in recommending pupils for school swimming colours.
Following in his mother and father's wake, William proved himself to be a stylish swimmer even at infants' school and took part in the annual school gala.
Aged seven, while in Form 4 at Wetherby School, west London, he won the Grunfield Cup awarded to the boy with the best overall swimming style.
At Ludgrove prep school, Berkshire, William was in the swimming team, junior then senior, and in 1992-93 was a member of a record-breaking freestyle relay team.
He also received bronze and silver survival awards, and the Swordfish medley skills award.
As well as swimming and water polo, the sporting prince likes rugby, hockey, football, basketball, tennis, cross-country running and clay pigeon shooting.
PRINCE WILLIAM GETS ETON'S SWORD OF HONOUR (08/06/99)
Prince William has been presented with Eton's Sword of Honour - the school's award for the best all round first-year cadet.
The Prince, who will be 17 later this month, received the accolade in front of his father, the Prince of Wales.
The honour is given after consideration by the officers of the cadet corps.
William, who is in the lower sixth form, opted to join the corps at the beginning of the school year.
He chose it in favour of weekly volunteer work in the school's local area.
Charles, who spent 10 years in the Royal Navy, was said to be pleased that his son chose the military option, but had not actively encouraged the decision.
A St James's Palace spokeswoman said: "William's father was there and was absolutely delighted and immensely proud of his son."

TARA AND PRINCES(09/06/99)
Tara Palmer-Tomkinson has been banned from going on holiday with Princes William and Harry.
The It Girl, who recently spent four weeks in an American drink and drugs clinic, has become such an embarrassment to the Royal Family that Prince Charles has decided to keep her away from his sons. Her antics, which have included taking off her bikini top in front of William, are regarded as becoming too familiar. There is also growing concern that she is taking liberties by talking about her friendship with the Princes.
'It is unlikely that she will be seen on holiday in the foreseeable future with Prince Charles or his sons,' a source close to the Prince said last night. Charles fears that Tara's time at the clinic in Arizona may not have been enough to help her solve her problems.
He is close to her family, especially Tara's mother, Patti, and he has no intention of severing his close relationship with them. But he believes Tara has gone too far and that his sons have become embarrassed by her.
'They are teenage boys, and like all boys of that age are sensitive about such blatant behaviour. They squirm when she gets up to her antics,' the source said. In particular, William was not happy when, during a yacht cruise around the Greek islands last summer, Tara took off her bikini top in front of him and encouraged him to look at her. Tara thought that it was hilarious, but shy William simply turned away.
On another break in Klosters, the Royals' favourite ski resort, Tara infuriated Charles when she launched herself on to William's lap. An embarrassed William fought her off and left the room. Tara's friends say she has always been playful around the Princes. But nowadays these kinds of tricks are not regarded as funny - Charles fears that Tara's behaviour is erratic and out of control.
