Hmm, that's strange. That's odd. That's.. Bizarre! If Kala has a white dragon, shouldn't she be down in the larger weyrs, with the ivories, instead of way up here, with the greens? You carefully knock on her door, curiosity overcoming you.
When it finally swings open, you see a girl of about 13 turns with dark brown hair and misty blue eyes watching you. She has red circles under her eyes, her cheeks flushed, and she sniffs every few seconds. It would appear as if she's been crying. "Come in, please.." she mumbles, stepping back and dissapearring from view. Your curiosity peaked, you walk in, then stop as you think you hear something...a low growl. But where's it coming from? You take a step backwards, just in time, too, for a green watch-wher lunges at you, the chain taking up the slack just inches away from you. You stand and stare, stunned, as the wher growls and snaps at the spot you were just recently occupying. "Shells! VERDI! STOP IT!" The wher stops suddenly and, snarling all the way back to her post, she dissapears into the darkness. "Mm.. Sorry about that, visitor. Times are hard. She's very protective. My name is Kala, by the way." Kala gives a woeful look to the green watch-wher as you cautiously walk in to the darkened weyr. There is a lone glow basket lit in the corner of this weyr, making the outline of the table just visible. You can also catch the light glinting off of several white objects, and a splash of gold, too. "Please, have a seat. I'll be just a moment." You frown at her retreating form. Why is she so mopey? You can hear some sniffling sounds as she walks towards the glinting patches of gold, rumbling and a few hopeful chirps, which soften as she shuffles back into view, a white firelizard on her shoulder, gazing at you curiously, and two mugs of steaming hot klah in her hands. Kala's eyes are locked on the floor as she approaches the table, setting one mug in front of you, and keeping the other to herself as she pulls out the chair from across the table. A curious silence ensues after you thank her for the klah; you not knowing what to say, while she merely seems downtrodden. "This is Chenoa." She starts. "I hatched her from an egg at Middle Weyr. But you won't be able to get one anymore. Biri was the last. I suppose that makes him special." You question who Biri is, and she smiles softly and points to the table. Sure enough, the dim outline of a sleeping white firelizard is visible. How come you never noticed him before? "That, is Biri. I won him when I came up with a name for one of the Lunar Dragons: Raden. I thoguht it was fitting, and appearantly, it was!" Another long, painful silence. Kala sighs. "Kala means time/black, Chenoa means white and Verdi means green. Not really creative, but, then again, Biri doesn't even have a meaning." You fidget. It's so quiet. Kala gives another soft smile. "Lakyth's asleep." She must've caught the confused look on your face, for she hesitantly explains, "Lakyth is my dragon." Oh, yes! The white one! Now you can finally figure out why she's in a green's weyr. Before you can ask, though, she lifts the glow basket and shines it over the head of a sleeping, white-with-gold-patches dragonet. "Isn't she beautiful?" she murmmers, awe filling both your faces. That's a pernese dragon! This girl impressed two white flits, a white dragon, and a green watch-wher? Phew! You hurriedly agree, and she continues.
"The best day of my life, and the saddest. I impressed my darling Lakyth, and M.. M'iki.." Her eyes fill up with tears. "Lorith and Kuzalth both went between. Both of them. And M'iki.. He's alright.. I guess.. But it will never be the same for me." She turns to face you. "Lakyth was the first to hatch after her parents died. And there's another white like her. White with bronze patches. Roryth is his name. He's pretty.." She trails off. "I need to feed Chenoa. Want to help?" You nod. Anything to break this silence! Kala walks around and uncovers all of the glow baskets, finally giving you a chance to look at your surroundings. The door is on the right wall, at the farthest end away from you. Actually, it's just a hole carved in stone. The window, which is closer on the same wall, is exactly the same, only off the ground. The wall opposites you has a door on the left end, leading to an adjoining room. It also has a bookshelf, filled with books on animal care, and pictures of different animals, such as a gryphon, wings flared, with a bandage on the right wing, a runner beast with a cast on its leg, a picture with Kala and what appears to be her mother and father, and several pictures of Chenoa and Kala and Biri, even one of Verdi! On the left wall, there's another window smack in the center, opening to the outside. Pushed up against the wall, with the head of the bed touching the wall you're on, is her bed. The sleeping furs are rolled up neatly at the foot of the bed, and above the head are three things: a framed certificate of some sort, and two shelves. The top shelf has an empty space where the bowl was, and several toys and things beside it. The bettom shelf has clothes and a pretty ruby necklace. The last wall, which is behind you, has the table carved out of it, and two chairs, with some more pictures, of course. By this time, Kala returns to you with a bowl full of meat. Chenoa croons happily and Kala sets the bowl on the table. "Did you finish your klah? Here, just put the meat in her mouth, like this.." She seems preoccupied, as if her mind isn't with her actions. Still, you try not to notice this, and actually have some fun trying to fill this tiny firelizard's gigantic appetite. "Go ahead and slack up a bit. Chenoa's stuffed!" As if to prove it, Chenoa lazily glides over to the outside window sill to sun herself. "I'll feed Verdi when you leave." You nod and ask her about the pictures of the animals. "Ah, yes. I've had a way with animals for quite awhile, it's kind of a gift I have. If the position existed, I'd be Master Animal Healer! Those are some of the "hopeless cases" that I rescued. Not much, I know, but I'm proud none the less. And so is my family. None of that "my parents died when I was born" stuff! My family supports me in everything, even if I am an only child from Igen. So boring and cold over there.." She shakes her head. "And, I impressed my lovey, Lakyth, from Middle Weyr. That was a very special clutch. There are twice as many white eggs as golds!" You gasp in surprise and she nods in understanding. "It's incredible, isn't it? It's because a gold, being Lorith, was flown by a blue, being Kuzalth. Both of them were M'iki's..." She suddenly drops her head. "Felcia impressed the queen egg. She's alright. T'rin, one of my best friends, impressed a bronze, and E'der, another of my closest buds, impressed a brown. Some man named C'dmon impressed a brown as well." She looks you over. "Hmm.. Where are you from?" You answer and she nods. "Like I said, I'm from Igen. Buckets of snow. T'ler said I'd make a good dragon rider, though, when he was visiting the lord holder and I brought him some klah. Hinaeth was staring at me and rumbling and I pretty much wanted to run and hide! It's not every day a huge bronze sits and growls at you, right? Shells! It definately wasn't what I expected, though! I packed my belongings right then and left. I had some pets there, and my family, but that's pretty much all I miss. It was so boring!" She sighs. "Shells, I'm probably boring you, and Verdi is hungry! It was nice talking to you, visitor! Please come again!" You smile and assure her that you'll try your best, and you hope she gets to feeling better. |
