Funaki arrived in the WWF in the spring of 1998, a part of the group Klub Kamakazi (quickly renamed Kaientai). He came in with fellow Japanese wrestlers Mens Teioh and Dick Togo, and they launched attacks on the light heavyweight champion Taka Michinoku. They turned their attention to Val Venis, who had just revealed he was sleeping with their manager Yamaguchi-san's wife. Taka revealed that Mrs. Yamaguchi-san was really his sister and joined Kaientai. The four suffered an embarassing loss to the Oddities at SummerSlam, and Togo, Yamaguchi and Teioh left the WWF soon afer that.

Taka and Funaki continued to team as Kaientai throughout 1999 and 2000. Funaki won the Hardcore Title briefly in the Hardcore Battle Royal at WrestleMania 2000, but lost it a few moments later. Though they wrestled mostly on Jakked/Metal and Heat, they had brief feuds with the Acolytes and the Mean Street Posse. In late 2001, Taka injured his shoulder, and left Funaki to carry on as a singles wrestler. When the WWF roster split, he was put on Smackdown with the Cruiserweight division. He became part wrestler, part backstage interviewer and started calling himself "Smackdown's #1 Announcer."
