Shane Helms was the last WCW Cruiserweight Champion under the Time-Warner regime. The WWF bought WCW in March 2001 and Shane was signed to a contract. He made his debut in June on Smackdown. He defended his title and lost it to Billy Kidman. After making it well known that one of his idols was comic book hero The Green Lantern, Helms changed his name to Hurricane Helms, later shortened to the Hurricane, and fashioned a super hero identity of his own, complete with a cape and costume. He stole Molly Holly away from Spike Dudley and rechristened her as his sidekick, Mighty Molly. He teamed with Lance Storm to lose a fatal four way elimination match at Unforgiven for the WWF Tag Team Titles. They lost to the Hardy Boyz at No Mercy, and Hurricane seemed to be out of a job when the WCW/ECW Alliance lost at Survivor Series. However, Ric Flair hired him back and he returned by saving Torrie Wilson from Crash on an episode of Smackdown.
Mighty Molly returned by his side, and the Hurricane won the Hardcore Title for a few moments at WrestleMania X-8 from Spike Dudley before Molly turned on him and won the title herself. When the roster split occurred, Hurricane was drafted to Smackdown while Molly was drafted to Raw. The Hurricane started to get notes from someone who claimed to have a past with him, along with several clues. Hurricane won the Cruiserweight title from Tajiri and the mystery person vowed to reveal himself soon. It turned out to be a her. Nidia, the first female winner of Tough Enough, was mad because the Hurricane broke off their relationship months ago. When Hurricane confronted her, he was attacked by her new boyfriend Jamie Noble. He beat Hurricane for the Cruiserweight Title at King of the Ring, and Hurricane continued to compete on Smackdown and Velocity. When the fall came around, he jumped to Raw and teamed with Kane to win the World Tag Team Titles from Lance Storm and Christian. They lost them a few weeks later to the team of Christian and Chris Jericho.
When the Rock left Smackdown for Raw, it was the Hurricane who hounded him, pointing out his faults. They met in a match, where Hurricane won thanks to Steve Austin. He lost a rematch a few weeks later, and then pinned Ric Flair in a tag team match.
