Davey Boy Smith broke into professional wrestling as a teenager in his home country of England. He made his way to New Japan Pro Wrestling, where he first teamed with the Dynamite Kid, and then jumped to All Japan Pro Wrestling and also started working for Calgary Stampede Wrestling, where he became a member of the Hart Family when he married Diana Hart. He and the Dynamite Kid came to the World Wrestling Federation in 1985, and were named the British Bulldogs. They captured the WWF World Tag Team Titles in 1986, but Dynamite's injuries caught up with him and they lost the titles to the Hart Foundation in 1987, when manager Jimmy Hart bribed referee Danny Davis to assist them with the win. They teamed with Tito Santana to face off against the Hart Foundation and Danny Davis at WrestleMania III, but lost. They feuded with the Islanders and their manager Bobby Heenan into 1988, but lost a six man to them at WrestleMania IV also. The team dissolved soon after that, as Dynamite was too injured to compete anymore.
Davey Boy toured Japan and Calgary again until he returned to the WWF in 1991 as the British Bulldog. He beat the Warlord at WrestleMania VII and feuded with him through the rest of the year. At SummerSlam '92, which was held in London, the Bulldog received a shot at Bret Hart, the Intercontinental Champion. The Bulldog won the belt in front of 80,000 of his countrymen. He held the belt until October, when he lost it to Shawn Michaels. He left the WWF for WCW, and was a contender for Vader's WCW Title for most of 1993, but was fired after an incident in Calgary.
Davey Boy returned to the WWF at SummerSlam '94. He was at ringside to support Bret against Owen Hart in their family feud, but became involved after Jim Neidhart, who was alligned with Owen, clotheslined Davey and Diana over the barricade. He teamed with Bret in a series of matches against Owen and Neidhart, and then started teaming with Lex Luger in early 1995 to form the Allied Powers. They worked their way into tag title contention but failed to win the belts from Owen and Yokozuna. The Bulldog left the team when he offered to team with World Champion Diesel against Men on a Mission and then turned on Diesel, helping Mabel and Mo beat him up. He took Jim Cornette as his manager and became part of the stable Camp Cornette with Owen and Yokozuna. Luger then quit the WWF, and the Bulldog scored a win over Bam Bam Bigelow at In Your House III and won over World Champ Diesel by DQ at In Your House IV. At In Your House V, he received a title shot against newly crowned champ Bret Hart, but lost their long-awaited rematch.
In early 1996, Yokozuna got tired of Cornette and his teammates turned on him. Bulldog teamed with Owen and Vader to beat Yokozuna, Ahmed Johnson and Jake Roberts at WrestleMania XII. In May, the Bulldog received a title shot against Shawn Michaels, but became incensed when his wife accused Shawn of making a pass at her. The allegations turned out to be false, and Michaels and Davey met at In Your House: Beware of Dog. A double pin occurred, and a rematch was set for King of the Ring> The Bulldog lost this time, and feuded with the likes of Ahmed Johnson and Sid through the rest of the summer. In the fall, he teamed with Owen to win the tag team titles from the Smokin' Gunns, and beat them in a rematch a month later. They beat the fake Diesel and Razor Ramon at IYH: It's Time and feuded with Doug Furnas and Phillip LaFon throughout the winter.
In February of 1997, the WWF held a tournament for the new European Title. The Bulldog and Owen made it to the finals and the Bulldog beat Owen in Germany to become the first European Champ, causing some friction between himself and Owen. They defended their tag titles against Vader and Mankind at WrestleMania XIII, but the match went to a double count-out. Davey and Owen seemed like they were to split up, but Bret Hart, who himself had been jaded from the fans' recent response to him, stepped in and reconciled not only them but the rivalry between himself and Owen. The Hart Foundation was reformed, and Brian Pillman soon joined, as well as a returning Jim Neidhart. They insulted American wrestling fans, but were cheered everywhere else in the world, especially Canada. Bulldog and Owen lost the tag titles to Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin in the spring, but Michaels and Austin were unable to function as a team and the titles were vacated. Owen and Davey made it to the finals of the tournament for new champs, but were beaten by the team of Austin and Dude Love, another of Mick Foley's personalities. When Owen won the IC title, they went down their own paths, and Davey feuded with Ken Shamrock, beating him by DQ at SummerSlam. He then teamed with Bret and beat the Patriot and Vader at IYH: Badd Blood. However, after the events of Survivor Series '97 in Montreal, the Bulldog asked for his release and went to WCW, along with Bret and Neidhart.
While in WCW, he was accidentally slammed on a trap door that was in the ring for the Warrior's entrance and his career was nearly ended. He was fired by Eric Bischoff while in the hospital, but managed to make a recovery. In mid-1999, shortly after the death of Owen Hart, the WWF offered him a contract and Davey accepted. He returned in the fall and immediately won the Hardcore Title from the Big Bossman. However, he immediately gave it to Al Snow, whom he felt sorry for. The fans cheered his return, but he turned against them when he attacked the Rock. The Bulldog replaced the Undertaker in a Six Pack Challenge for the WWF Title at Unforgiven '99 against Rock, Austin, Foley, Kane and Triple H. Triple H won the match, but the Bulldog's feud with the Rock continued and he lost to Rock a month later at No Mercy. He quickly won the European Title once again from D'lo Brown but lost it in a Triple Threat Match at Armageddon against D'lo and Val Venis.
In early 2000, the WWF sent Davey into a drug rehab facility due to his addiction to painkillers that he acquired during his back injury. He emerged in May 2000 and won the Hardcore Title from Crash Holly at Insurrextion 2000 in London, but lost the title a few days later. He had a relapse with his addiction, and the WWF decided to release him. The Bulldog worked the independents while training his son to be a wrestler over the next couple of years. Unfortunately, years of steroid abuse and drug addiction caught up to him and Davey Boy Smith passed away on May 17, 2002. Though his life was messed up due to drug addiction, the British Bulldog is missed not only by his family and friends, but by his fans also.
