Schoodic Peninsula Entrance
The Schoodic Peninsula section of Acadia National Park is reached via US 1 and Route 186 beyond the town of Winter Harbor. Lightly visited, this part of the park offers views of the Mount Desert Island portion of the park, several lighthouses, and a spectacular surf that crashes onto the granite shores at Schoodic Point. |
Gorham Mountain Summit Steve and Vicki rest at the sign and cairns marking the summit of Gorham Mountain. Spectacular vistas of the eastern coast of Mount Desert Island are to be had while hiking the Gorham Mountain Trail. Cadillac Mountain and Dorr Mountain complete the Acadian skyline. Cadillac Mountain Entrance
This sign appears as you drive from Route 233 onto the Cadillac Mountain Road. This road climbs to the parking area near the summit of Cadillac Mountain, 1530 feet above sea level, and numerous parking overlooks along the way offer views toward the Atlantic ocean and also toward the lakes of the western part of the park. The sun casts its first rays onto the United States at Cadillac Mountain, and sunsets here are equally spectacular. On August 12, 1993 we shared the summit with literally hundreds of others to view the Perseid meteor shower from the treeless granite cliffs. |
