Time and Money

Telling Time With Magazine Watches
Objective
Students will practice the skill of telling time through examining, collecting, and sorting photographs of watches from catalogues.* Ask students to look through the catalogues and cut out as many photos of watches as they can (give them about 10 minutes). * After this time, collect the catalogues and hand out the large pieces of paper. * Ask students to sort their watch photos by putting them into groups of watches displaying the same time. * Before allowing the students to glue these on the paper, check to see if the photos in each group of time are the same. * Ask students to glue their photos keeping them in the groups. * Then, have students write down the time represented under each group. * Display the collections. What time was displayed the most? The least? Why could this be so?

Coupon Money

Students will practice representing written money into actual money. * Wander around from student to student and ask each of them to put their hand in the box and take out a coupon. * Have students glue their coupon on one side of their piece of paper. * On the other side of the paper, explain to sudents that you would like them to draw the coins and/or the bills that would be needed to equal the amount on the coupon. You may want to use play money instead, to prevent the obstacle of drawing. * Repeat the process.

A Little Goes a Long Way Game

Students will learn how to convert pennies and other coins into their respective coins.
Students can also get practice identifying odd and even numbers through this game.
* Split class up into groups of three or four. Ask one person in each group to be the banker and give them a container of the fake nickles, dimes, and quarters. * Give each group a jar of pennies and a die. * Each student in each group rolls the die. If they roll an even number they get one penny from the banker, and the next player rolls. * Once a student collects five pennies, they can turn them in to the banker so the banker can give them a nickle. Then when a student collects five more pennies, they can turn the pennies and the nickle to receive a dime, and etc... * Set a time limit of about 30 minutes, and whoever has the most money at the end of the time wins.
