Final Fantasy VIII was another break-through game. Basically, it was the one that wowed the critics and won over the masses. I guess Square and Sony's big marketing on the tv and magazines worked. *g*

The game is on three cd disks, the ending alone taking up one disc. I think I timed the ending to be about an hour. *happy sigh* Unfortunately, the ending doesn't say what happens to the party after the battle, as in what they do to help the people, marriages, etc... Call me a romantic, but I want to know whether Cloud and Tifa got together or not! *g*

Graphically, it's *very* realistic. Well, in battles and the movie segments at least. On the screen close-up, they were blocky and ...ugly. Let's say that Final Fantasy III and VII cannot be compared. The music was a little morbid, but you expect that with a morbid and bleak storyline for Cloud, the hero.

Story-wise, it's hard to say. I liked some elements, but in general it was hard to understand the first time playing. Cloud's recollection of events is somewhat warped, as the player learns through the game, so nothing makes much sense until near the end of the second disc. I liked the romantic sub-plot and the Aeris' connection to the man in charge of raising the whole knowledge of the Ancients theme, her father.

The main character is Cloud, a pretty messed up guy who's supposedly an ex-Soldier of this big company that controls the world. Tifa is his supposed childhood friend and a member of a rebel group. Oh, and he loves her and she loves him, but they're both too shy to say it.
Aeris is the third lady. She likes Cloud too. She's also an Ancient and the only person who can summon the magic to save the world from Sephiroth, Cloud's nemisis. Problem is that she dies and Cloud is grieving her, and well, you get the picture...
Barrett is the leader of the rebels and hates the company for killing off everyone in his town. Oh, and he has a daughter named Marlene.
Red XIII is a lion-like creature from Cosmos Canyon, a place where people philosophize about the world and stuff like that. His job is to guard the people. But he's only a youngster and gets saved from a bio lab by Cloud and company.
Yuffie is a ninja clan brat who most players hate. But you got to admit she's good at what she does.
Cid is well, a former pilot for the evil company. He joins because he's angry at the company for not allowing him to go into space.
Vincent is half-monster. His limits change him into monsters. He joins because he was in love with Sephiroth's mom and can't forgive himself for not stopping her from having Sephiroth as an experiment.
Cat Sith is a radio-controlled stuffed animal by an employee of the bad company. Originally, he's a spy, but eventually, he becomes a trusted and useful friend.

Let's see, cool things. I liked the gambling and chocobo racing. I liked the materia system to replace the espers of FFIII. I thought the save spaces were tacky; I prefer the little shiny dust thingys in FFIII. I liked the little movies that happened through the game. Breeding chocobos was fun. The Weapons were a good challenge for more experienced players.

My closing comments would be to buy this game. It's well worth the high price tag and remember to buy a memory card along with it. *g* I didn't and had to send my dad out to buy one while I played.
