There will come a time when the earth grows sick
And when it does a tribe will gather
From all the cultures of the world
Who believe in deeds and not words
They will work to heal it
They will be known as the warriors of the rainbow

This page is dedicated to the environment and all those 'rainbow warriors' who want to heal it. At the moment there is a great deal of rhetoric around, (especially amongst the politicians) about how we can save the environment, and how we can 'do our little bit.' In a political world which is structured in such a way that capitalist profit and progress are the only measurements of progress, and standards of living in real terms are merely glossed over, it is easy to 'give up' or feel fustrated. It seems to me that whilst technological progress zooms forward, 'social progress' is falling backwards at a frightening rate. For instance the prison population in the US is more that two million people. This is the largest prison population of any industrialised country in the world - and most 'third world' countries. Despite government boasts that the economy is 'booming' in the US and the UK, the gap between the very rich and the very poor is increasing at a staggering rate. The depths of unemployment and suffering in the UK and the US are cleverly concealed by government statistics. The British goverment spend two million pounds every day bombing the Serbians, but have contributed just eight million pounds in total to the Kosovan aid effort, whilst continuing to slowly erode welfare payments, the educational system, and the national health service. At the same time the US and UK goverments justify their actions with untruths such as 'people need to change their culture' and to 'rely less on the government.' You may think that I have gone off the subject here slightly, but I belive that you cannot seperate social progress and environmnetal protection. Not until 'externalities' such as land, air, and water pollution are included in the economic equation will there be any improvement in the way the earth is treated. Not until the actions of multinational corporations are regulated and their environmnetal destruction accounted for, will things begin to improve. The growth in prison populations in the US and elsewhere is symptomatic of the alienation felt within society, it is also symptomatic of the increase in destructive technologies, of the increase in worthless and meaningless employment, and of the growth of sprawling, polluted urban areas.
If you have a few spare minutes please fill in my guestbook on the main page. What do you think we can do to improve the state of the environment and improve social conditions? Please let me know if you have any useful and relevant links or addresses. My hope is that this page will grow in size and become a useful source of environmnetal links and information. My hope too, is that difficult as it may be, it will help us to live our lives in more environmentally conscious way.
Words are important, actions are essential. Join the Warriors of the Rainbow.
