THE CRUCIFIXION

The story of the arrest and humiliation of Jesus
before his fellow man is well known to most of us.
But, before He was even arrested,
the emotional stress and suffering had begun to drain him.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed
to His Father for help. He was in agony
in anticipation of the event of the cross.
The emotional burden that he faced
caused a bloody sweat.
This happens when emotional stress
causes the tiny capiliary
and sweat glands to begin to break
and mingle blood with sweat.
Crucifixion is the most humiliating
form of death and Jesus was facing it.

TRY TO IMAGINE IF YOU WILL:

On the day of the crucifixion,
preparations for the scourging (crucifixion) began.
Jesus was stripped of His clothing
and His hands tied to post above His head.
A Roman legionnaire whipped Him again
and again across his arms, legs and back.
First, only braking the skin. Then going deeper
into the membrane below the skin. Blood begins
to flow and then as the cutting goes deeper,
arterial bleeding. Finally, the skin on His
back was hanging in ribbons.
Near death the beating was stopped.
Jesus was left to fall to the hard ground.
A crown of thorns was pressed into his tender scalp.
More bleeding occured. He was then displayed
in public and humiliated beyond comprehension,
but that was not enough. The crowd shouted
"Crucify him!", and Pilot gave in to them.

The robe was ripped from His back
and replaced with a soldier's garment.
The robe had stuck to the blood and wounds
and caused excruciating pain.
Then, the heavy cross beam was placed across
His shoulders and tied to His arms
and He was forced to walk and carry his own cross.
The cross gouges into him, as stumbling
and falling he makes his way through the crowd
to the hill where it would be placed.
He is already dehydrated and weak beyond belief
and did recieve help at the very end.

The Crusifixion begins. Jesus is stripped of the
soldiers clothing and again his skin bleeds.
He is allowed only a loin cloth to wear.
He is offered a mild mixture for the pain.
Milder than an asprine. He refused.
With Jesus tied to it, the beam is
thrown against the ground and
heavy square iron nails are driven
through his wrist and into the wood.
The cross beam is now lifted into place
at the top of the standing piece of the cross
which is already in the ground.
His feet are put together,
one on top of the other and
a nail driven through them.

Dogs are around him. Wicked men are around him.
The people gloat and divide his garments
and cast lots for them.
He was scorned, despised and stripped
of all human dignity.

Now, unbelievable physical damage begins.
Slowly he sags down. Excruciating pain
shooting up his arms and into his neck.
As he trys to push himself up
to avoid the stretching of his arms,
he puts his full weight on the nail through his feet.
It tears through the nerves of His feet.
As His arms get tired, the muscles begin
knotting in deep unyeilding pain.
The cramps stop Him from pushing Himself up.
The pressure on His lungs cause
Him not to be able to exhale.
He trys to raise Himself to get a breath.
Carbon dioxide builds up in His blood
stream and the cramps partially subside.
He is able to push up
and exhale for a short time.
This occurs repeatedly.
The already shredded tissue is being torn
from His back against the rough tember.
More suffering begins. There is a deep pain
in His chest as the sack around His heart
slowly begins to fill with fluid and
begins to compress His heart.

The bones in his arms are being pulled out of joint.
He looses control of his bodily functions.
Now it's almost over. The loss of tissue
fluids is at a critical level.
The heart is struggling to pump. His lungs
are barly able to grasp small amounts of air.
Full dehydration has occurred and
Jesus gasps the words, "I thirst".
His tougue is sticking to his jaws.
He can feel death coming. His next words
are: "It is finished".....
and he allows his body to die.

AND ON THE THIRD DAY......

ALLELUIA, CHRIST AROSE!

THE RESURRECTION
TAKEN FROM MATTHEW 28

After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning,
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.
And suddenly there was a great earthquake;
for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven,
came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.
His appearance was like lightning,
and his clothing white as snow.
For fear of him the guards shook
and became like dead men.
But the angel said to the women,
"Do not be afraid;
I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.
He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said.
Come, see the place where he lay.
Then go quickly and tell his disciples,
'He has been raised from the dead,
and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee;
there you will see him.'
This is my message for you."

WHERE DOES THE WORD EASTER COME FROM?

Easter is an English word derived from
the name of a Germanic goddess,
and you won’t get any argument from me if you think
the word should be deprecated because
of its association with pagan fertility rites.
On the other hand, the Old Testament book of Esther
is named after a Jewish heroine who
bore the name of the goddess Ishtar!
In the ancient Church, the celebration of the
Resurrection was called Passover.
Today, Orthodox Christians call this holiday Pascha,
(as in paschal lamb) which is the Greek word for Passover.
In Anglican churches, the designation
Sunday of the Resurrection
is often preferred over Easter
and in Lutheran liturgy,
it is called The Resurrection of Our Lord.
The current ecumenical trend in
English-speaking countries is
to use Easter for the fifty-day season
and Easter Day for the day of the Resurrection.
Aside from English and German, the words
for Passover and Easter are the same in most languages.
