This is more a personal family page than anything,
but I hope you get a kick out of it, too. Heck, you might even want to sing along the
second time. If for no other reason to cover up my singing. (grin)
It was a tradition with me when all of my children and grandchildren were babies to sing
this song to them. Ha! They didn't know or care if I couldn't sing. :-) I have such fond memories of sitting in my Lazy Boy rocker snuggling my
sweet baby grandchildren in my arms and singing this to them. Didn't have a rocker with my
children, but sang it to them anyway. :)
I'm putting this page up for my children and grandchildren, so that they can learn the
song and maybe sing it to their children and grandchildren. The original song uses
Bambino for a boy, but if you're singing to a girl, it's Bambina. And if you know
how to spell Cucalagunga...please let me know! LOL
My daughter has always ask me to write it down for her....well, here goes my "very
special gal".
For reasons unknown to me, the wave will not play.
Just click on the bow to download the song.
You can listen to it as you read the words.

ITALIAN LULLABY
Original song believed to be sung by
Perry Como (circa 1950s)
Correct title believed to be CHI-BABA, CHI-BABA
MANY A YEAR AGO IN OLD SORRENTO,
A LITTLE DITTI WAS QUITE THE THING.
WHENEVER A MOTHER ROCKED HER BABY IN SORRENTO,
THIS LITTLE DITTI, SHE USED TO SING....
CHA BABA CHA BABA CHIHUAHUA, ENCHILADA CUCALAGUNGA,
CHA BABA, CHA BABA , CHIHUAHUA, MY BAMBINO GO TO SLEEP.
ALL THE STARS ARE IN THE SKY READY TO SAY GOODNIGHT, GOODNIGHT.
CAN'T YOU SEE YOUR DOLL IS SLEEPY, TOO.
CLOSE YOUR DROWSY LITTLE EYES, MOMMA WITH HOLD YOU TIGHT,
WHILE SHE SINGS THIS LULLABY TO YOU.... EVER SO SWEET.
CHA BABA, CHA BABA, CHIHUAHUA, ENCHILADA CUCALAGUNGA,
CHA BABA, CHA BABA, CHIHUAHUA, MY BAMBINO GO TO SLEEP.
CHA BABA, CHA BABA, CHIHUAHUA, MY BAMBINO GO TO SLEEP.
February, 2006, I received a letter from a very nice man who told me he used to sing this song as a teenager. He said it was by Perry Como and gave me the title above and these words below for the chorus. LOL A bit different from what I remembered them.
Thank you, my friend for the corrections. :)
Chi-baba, chi-baba, chi-wawa,
An’ chi-lawa kook-a la goombah
Chi-baba, chi-baba, chi-wawa
my bambino go to sleep!.
IF YOU HAVE TIME, DROP ME A NOTE. I have received very nice emails from other people who have either sang this song or have had it sung to them. I loved hearing about their memories of this song.
