Chapter 5
The Penthouse
Carly rolled over in her bed for what seem like the hundredth time that night. Ever since her confrontation with Sonny the night before she had not got a moments sleep. She could still feel his hands on her face, and every time she closed her eyes all she could see was him looking back at her with those eyes, so intense and passionate. She had made a point of not being alone with Sonny since the incident, she had not gotten out of bed until she heard the door close behind him, and she had taken Michael over to the brownstone to play just in case Sonny came home during the day sometime. When Bobbie was called in for surgery, Carly knew that it was time for her to go home and face Sonny. But she stopped at Kelly's on the why home, and their she ran into Mike. She had jumped at Mike's offer to cook dinner for her and Michael at first because she did not want to be alone with Sonny, but she had really enjoyed the time that she had spent with him. When Sonny had taken her hand with his request they talk, Carly's heart had jumped, all she could think was that she had to get to the safety of her room, FAST. The kiss on the cheek had been an impulse; a way to keep things light, but it seemed to have had the opposite effect.
The Coffee Warehouse, The next day
Sonny sat at his desk shuffling the papers around on it, without really seeing them. He had been so distracted since the night he had argued with Carly. Up until that point things had been going pretty well between them, sure they fought a lot, but when the fight was over they were friends again. But this time it was different, Carly had become so distant and he knew why. He had never known Carly to be afraid of anything, be he knew this thing between them scared her. It scared him too, when he insisted that Carly and Michael move in with him he had hoped that they could find some way be become friends, for the sake of the baby. He never expected that he would start to have more then friendly feelings for her. They needed to talk about what was going with them or their entire relationship would be destroyed, if only he could get Carly alone for a few minutes. Just then he had an idea, it would take a little maneuvering but he was going to get sometime alone with Carly tonight if it was the last thing he did.
The Penthouse
How long could it take for Carly and Mike to shop for baby clothes, Sonny thought as he looked at his watch for the 10th time in 3min. After he made the decision that tonight he and Carly would talk, he had called Bobbie and asked her to take Michael for the night. Then he had left a note for Carly saying that he had business to attend to and would not be home till late, thus insuring that she would not be afraid to come home. Lastly he had called Mike and asked Mike to invite Carly on a shopping spree for baby clothes, so that Sonny would have a chance to set the scene. And quite a scene it was, Sonny had set a romantic table for two with candles, champagne glasses, and sparkling spider sat in ice. Sonny had cooked Carly's favorite meal, and was dressed to kill. Sonny was about to call Mike to ask him what the hell was taking so long when the door opened and Carly walked in. To say that she was surprised by what she saw would be an understatement.
"What's going on", Carly asked as Sonny took the several packages she was carrying from her and placed them on the couch.
"I thought that we could have a nice dinner together, just the two of us. We really need to talk Carly" their was that world again talk, that was the last thing that Carly wanted to do. She wanted to hide under her bed and hope that the whole thing would go away, and things would go back to the way things were.
"I thought that you had some business to take care of tonight."
"I just said that so I could surprise you with dinner."
"What about Michael, I should go up stairs and see him."
"Michael is staying with Bobbie tonight" Sonny slipped Carly's jacket off her shoulders and motioned for her to sit down, "why don't you take a seat, and I'll bring out the dinner." Then Sonny disappeared into the kitchen before Carly could utter another protest. Why not Carly thought as she took a seat at the beautifully set table, she had never really been the kinda person to hide anyway.
As they ate dinner Sonny was careful to keep the conversation light he wanted to show her that they could have a good time together before he got into the heavier stuff. Carly described several of the outfits she had bought, plus some of the furniture that she and Mike thought would go good in the nursery. By the time they were finished dinner they talking like they were the best of friends, that's when Sonny decided it was time to turn things up a notch.
Chapter 6
The Penthouse
"Dance with me", Sonny said it more like a demand then a question, as his mouth curved into a slow sexy smile.
"We should clean up this mess" Carly's hand swept across the table full of dirty dishes they had accumulated during their five course meal.
"I'll take care of that later" Sonny reached out and took her hand in his. "Dance with me", he repeated. The slight nod of Carly's head was all Sonny needed, he lead her away from the table, and took her into his arms holding her close. The danced for nearly an hour with out a word, lost in the music, lost in each other. Carly sighed, though she was quite content to stay in Sonny's arms forever, it was time. She raised her head from Sonny shoulder so she could look him in the eye when she spoke.
"What was it that you wanted to talk about?" It took everything in Carly to keep her voice steady as she spoke. Sonny took a deep breath knowing that with what he said next he could lose everything, or gain more then he ever though possible.
"I wanted to talk to you about us, about this thing between us. I wanted to talk about the fact that those few minutes that you were missing last week took a few years off my life. And it was not just because you are carrying my children, it's because you're carrying my heart. I wanted to talk about how somehow in this big mess we have gotten ourselves into I have fallen so far in love, that without you I would be lost. That's what I wanted to talk about"
Carly's legs felt week beneath her, she was glad that Sonny was holding onto her so tightly or she might fall to the floor. Tears streamed down her face, she took a few shaky breaths before she opened her mouth to speak, but she could not think of a thing to say. So instead she took Sonny's face between her hands she pulled him down to meet her mouth in a passionate kiss. But it wasn't enough she needed more now, she needed all of him. Cary tore her mouth away from Sonny's and whispered in his ear in a voice filled with desire.
"Take me to bed"
Sonny didn't need any more encouragement then that. Scooping her into his arms easily, despite her advanced weight, Sonny carried Carly up the stair and into his room. And in the bed that they had once had sex in out of hatred and fear, they now made passionate love to each other.
After several hours of love making Carly and Sonny fell asleep in each others arm, and they would have been quite happy to stay that way for quite a while, except Carly woke up and decided she was rather hungry. So she de-tangled herself from Sonny, being careful not to wake him and she slipped down the stairs to find something to eat. Carly found some crackers in the kitchen cupboard and was about to head up the stairs with them, when she heard her purse ringing.
"Carly Benson" she said into the phone wondering who would be calling her at this hour.
"Caroline, it's Jimmy. I think I found what you looking for. I found the guy at the police labs that did the phony tests that made everyone believe your cousin was dead. He didn't know who hired him; all he knew is that the money came from a company called Riddler Inc. So I did a little digging through Riddler Inc.'s finical records and discovered that the company also bought a castle in Ireland, around the same time as your cousin disappeared. I would bet anything that this castle is where the kid is being held, but who is holding him, I just don't know."
"Thank you so much Jimmy, you're a life saver, literally." Carly could not keep the excitement from her voice. She just had to get the information to Luke without anyone knowing that she had anything to do with it. "Do you think that you could drop the stuff you found off at a blues club called Luke's, and address it to Luke."
"Sure Caroline no problem."
"Jimmy there's a catch, no one can know that you were the one who found the information, or that I was the one to ask you to look for it in the first place."
"Though I can't understand why you wouldn't want to take the credit for saving your cousin, we'll do it your way. No one will ever know that either one of us had any part in this."
As Cary hung up the phone she smiled to herself, she knew that once Luke had this information it was only a matter of time before he brought Lucky home. Plus she had a worm bed to return to.
"Your not thinking of eating those in here, are you?" Carly let out a little yelp, she had thought that Sonny was still asleep when she climbed back into bed.
"But I'm hungry" Carly said with a little pout.
"So am I", Sonny had a devious smile, "But crackers wasn't what I had in mind". He said as he pulled Carly on top of him, devouring her lips with a fervent kiss.
Chapter 7
The Penthouse
The shrill ringing of the phone had woken both Sonny and Carly on the first ring but neither of then felt any need to answer it until the tenth ring. Moaning Sonny rolled over to grab the phone from the night table, pulling Carly with him not wanting to be deprived of her warmth for a second.
"What" he grumbled into the phone.
"Sonny" came Johnny's tentative voice "Luke Spencer is hear to see you, he says it's really important."
"All right Johnny, let him in I'll be down in a second." Sonny regretfully climbed out of bed explaining to Carly, "I have to take care of something, I wouldn't go if it wasn't important, I'll be back in a few minutes."
"I'll be waiting" Carly said with a sedative smile, as she smuggled further under the satin sheets for the warmth she had lost when Sonny had left the bed. This better be good Sonny thought to himself as he walked down the stairs to talk to Luke in a pair of silk pajama bottoms.
"Sorry to get you out of bed, but I had to know if you were responsible for this." Luke held a thick envelope in his hand. He look tired Sonny thought to himself, he doubted that Luke had got a seconds sleep since he began the search for his son.
"I've never seen it before in my life" Sonny said with a nod of his head "What is it."
"I found it on my desk at the club when I got back from Canada early this morning, which by the way was a dead end, and found it on my desk. There is a lot of stuff here, but the short version is that my son is being held captive in a castle in Ireland."
"And you don't know where it came from?"
"The only people that know that Lucky is alive are you, me, Roy, Laura, and the people that kidnapped him." Even though Sonny knew that was not entirely true, he knew that his guys would have brought anything to him, not dropped it off at the club.
"So you think that it's a trap set by Helena?"
"Either that or she is trying to through us off her sent, by sending us half way around the world. So the question is do I go to Ireland or do I try to get a trail on Helena?"
"You have to go to Ireland" came Carly's voice from the stairs where she had been sitting and listening to the conversation. "The information did not come from Helena, it came from me." Carly said all in one breath, afraid that if she paused she would not be able to finish. The two men looked at her as if she had just grown a second, or maybe third head.
"You better get down here and explain what you just said Caroline." Carly did what her uncle said, and when she was standing directly in front of him, she began her story.
"I was coming down stairs the other day when I heard Sonny and Benny talking" Carly spoke to Luke alone, not wanting to face Sonny "I was about to go back up stairs when I heard Sonny say something about Lucky being alive. I took off to tell Bobbie, but then I decided not to. So instead a called an old friend of mine, someone I knew that could get any information, someone I could trust. He called me late last night with what he had found, I asked him to drop it off at the club, I didn't want anyone to know I was involved. But when I heard you saying that you might not check it out I decided I had to tell you the truth. If Jimmy says Lucky is in Ireland, then Lucky is in Ireland." When Luke didn't say anything Carly felt compelled to say more "Look I know you have no reason to trust me after everything I have done since I arrived in this town, but I'm right about this, I know I am. This is your son's life Luke, you can't afford not to check this out."
"All right Caroline, I'll go to Ireland. And if I find Lucky there I will believe anything that you tell from now on, even if you tell me the sky is green and the grass is blue. But if I waste precious time running around Ireland, when I could be finding my son, so help me Caroline you will learn a whole new meaning of the term 'life's a bitch'" turning to Sonny he said "I'll take the next flight out, Laura will come with me. And with any luck next time I see us I'll have my son back." Then he was gone leaving Carly and Sonny alone with each other to deal with.
"I know what you're thinking" Carly began after a few minutes of silence, "but I didn't mean to overhear, if it had been about anything else I would have just forgot what I had heard. But this was about my family, though I may not really like then, and they may not like me, but as Bobbie says you only have one family. I knew Jimmy could help, I couldn't do nothing" Carly paused waiting for a response from Sonny, but when none came she continued "This living arrangement was never a good idea to begin with, it's to easy to overhear things. Bobbie said that her invitation to move into the brownstone was always open. You can see the twins when even you want, and Michael to. It's for the best, I'll go pack." By the time Carly was finished tears were streaming down her face, and she could barely get the last few wards out. She turned to head up the stairs to pack when Sonny garbed her and pulled her into his arms. He stroked her golden silk hair as he spoke.
"You're not going anywhere Carly. Did you miss the part last night where I told you I love you. Do you think that it all goes away just because you made one mistake, which really wasn't a mistake to begin with."
"Say that again" Carly lifted her tear stained face from Sonny shoulder, to look in his eyes, eyes filled with love for her.
"I said you didn't make a mistake. Don't get me wrong, I think that you should have came with me with what you heard, but I should have told you the truth to begin with. You did what you did to help your family and I can respect. And when Luke comes home with Lucky no one will be able to say you did the wrong thing. So from now on we'll be honest with each other, and I won't conduct anymore business in our home."
"I meant the part about loving me" Sonny smiled as he led her up the stairs to get dressed.
"I love you" he repeated, it was so easy to say, like it was the most natural thing in the world.
"I love you to" Carly said, and Sonny found they were the most beautiful words he had ever heard.
Chapter 8
The Brownstone
"It's been nearly three days since they left for Ireland, we should have heard something by now." Carly complained to Sonny as she paced across the living room floor of the Brownstone. She had been on edge since Luke had left, and Sonny didn't think it was good for the baby. He had tried to distract her by having the nursery decorated, but when the painters had come in she had packed a bag for herself and Michael and they stayed at the brownstone the last two nights. The paint fumes were not good for the babies or Michael she had told him. This had not made Sonny that happy since his bed now seemed very empty without Carly in it, but he didn't want the babies in any danger so he hadn't said anything.
"Carly calm down, please" he said grabbing her arm as she passed by him, he pulled her down to sit on his lap. "I'm sure that Luke will call as soon as they have Lucky."
"I know, I know, I'm just really nervous." Carly sighed as she lay her head against Sonny chest.
"I think what you need in a distraction."
"Really, and what did you have in mind for this distraction." Carly's voice is now low and seductive, and she had a wicked grin on her face. Sonny pulled Carly in for a slow passionate kiss, as they pull away Sonny says in his sexiest voice.
"I was thinking that we could…………decorate." Sonny burst out laughing at Carly's stunned expression. She rises from his lap hitting him in the shoulder as she goes.
"Ouch!!" He says in mock pain, gripping his shoulder. "It's not that I don't like your idea, it's just that we have another person to think about.'
"Michael is at the park with Bobbie and Lucas."
"Actually I'm talking about Mike, he's meeting us at the Penthouse to go shopping for furniture for the nursery."
"All right." Carly said reluctantly, leaving a note for Bobbie telling her where they were going and inviting her to join they when she returned from the park, the two of them set out in pursuit of matching cribs and change tables.
The Baby Boutique
Sonny smiled as he watch Carly, Mike, and Bobbie debate over the style of the cribs. They had been to about a billion stores by this point, and they still had not found anything that they considered good enough for the next line of the Spencer/Corinthos hairs. Sonny didn't mind though, it seemed to be keeping Carly's mind off the impending rescue of Lucky Spencer, on which they had still heard nothing. He shifted a sleeping Michael in his arm, Michael and Bobbie had joined them after Bobbie left Lucas at Tony's.
"Sonny what do you think, this one, or this one." She stood between the two cribs motioning to them one at a time as she spoke. They looked the same to Sonny, but to keep Carly happy he chose the one on her right, the one that Carly herself preferred.
"So it settled then, we'll take…." Carly voice trailed off as Johnny entered the store carrying Sonny cell phone with him.
"It's Luke Spencer." He said, Sonny reached for the phone but Johnny shook his head "He wants to talk to Ms. Benson." Carly nervously took the phone from Johnny, though she had been waiting for this call for days, she also dreaded that possible bad news that it might contain.
"Hello" she said into the phone, her voice was quivering.
"Hello their Caroline. And what color is the sky today?" Carly let out a scream of joy, Luke had found his son, and Carly could not be happier.
"Where are you know?", she asked anxious for their return to Port Charles.
"We, all three of us, are on a plan heading home as we speak. We should land in about five hours. I got to go now Caroline, but I'll see you real soon. Oh and feel free to tell anyone you want that my son is alive and I'm bring him home."
"What is going on Carly?" Bobbie asked in a suspicious voice as Carly hung up the phone. Now that she had Luke's ok Carly explained to both Bobbie and Mike the events of the past few day's. Glad that she could be the one to deliver such happy news to her mother. She looked over her mother's head at Sonny, who was cradling Michael in his arms and smiled, she was happy. For the first time in a long time she was really happy.
Epilogue
Approximately 3 months after the rescue of Lucky
General Hospital
Sonny flew out of the elevator as the door opened on his desired floor.
"Where is she?" Sonny asked the confused nurse behind the desk as though she should know exactly who and what he was talking about. When she did not answer right away he repeated the question, much louder this time.
"Calm down man" Luke came up behind Sonny and put his arm around his friends shoulder leading him away from the nurses station. Carly had been at the park with Luke, Lucky, Bobbie, and Michael.
"What's going on Luke, Bobbie called and said that I better get down here straight away. But she wouldn't tell me why. Is Carly all right?" Sonny was panicked now, why was Luke not telling him anything. Luke smiled at his friend, he had never seen Sonny like this before.
"Carly is doing fine Sonny, it's just that she's in labor." Suddenly it all made sense to Sonny, of course she was in labor it was less then a week to her due date. Why hadn't he thought of that.
"Can I go see her?" Sonny asked.
"If you want to." Came Lucky's voice from behind Sonny, he was holding Michael in his arms "But it might be a little dangerous, she has already threatened to kill every male who has gone in the room. The only person that she is letting near her is Bobbie" Sonny smiled, that sounded like his Carly.
"I think I'll risk it" Giving Michael a kiss on the head he said "Wish me luck men", and then headed to the labor room.
Six hours later
"You are NEVER allowed to touch me again" Carly grabbed Sonny hand and squeezed the life out of it. That was the tamest of the countless threats that Carly had made to Sonny since he had joined her in the labor room.
"Ok Carly, one more push" the doctor said.
"I don't want to push, you push yourself, you A$$"
"Carly, you have to push." Bobbie said in a voice that was meant to be soothing, but only served to aggravate Carly further.
"F**k off mother" she cried out, but she pushed anyway. This time she was rewarded with the sound of their baby's first cry. But the baby was not the only one crying, as the doctor gave Sonny his child to hold for the first time, he felt tears rolling down his face.
"Good job Miss. Spencer. One down, only one more to go."
One hour later
Sonny entered the waiting room where rather large groups of people were gathered. People that Carly had become very close to in a short period of time. Luke, Lucky, and Michael were joined by Mike, Lucas, Laura, Lulu, Roy, and surprisingly enough Emily. Everyone turned their attention to Sonny, wanting to here how Carly and the babies where doing.
"Girls" with a sort of dumfounded look on his face "We have two beautiful baby girls. Carly and the babies are both doing fine, they’re going to move her to her own room, and then she can have visitors."
Once Carly was settled in her room, the nurse brought the babies in for the new parents to spend some time with before visitors were allowed in.
"They are so beautiful Sonny, can you believe that we did this?" Carly had tears in her eyes as she spoke. She was holding her oldest daughter, by 42 minutes, in her arms. Sonny was standing beside her bed cradling the second baby in his arms.
"Of course they're beautiful, they are our children." Sonny said in his soupier voice, causing Carly to laugh. Carly reached out with her free hand to swat him, but he grabbed her hand, and held it in his own as he spoke.
"We still have one very important job to do." When Carly gave him a confused look Sonny continued "Well we have to pick names, we can't call them the babies forever."
"I think I got that covered. This little one here" She said looking at the small child curled up in her arm "is Virginia Barbara Spencer Corinthos. And that little one" She nodded her head towards the child that Sonny held "is Adella Lily Spencer Corinthos." The strange look that Sonny had on his face made Carly add, "If you don't like them, we can pick different names."
"No" Sonny shook his head "They’re perfect."
Carly smiled to herself, she liked that word perfect, and things really were perfect for her. Her and Sonny had not only found a way to get along, but they had found themselves in love with each other. She had the family she as ways wanted, as definitional as they were. Two months ago Luke and Lucky had come to her with papers legally changing her name to Spencer, to make it official. And now she had two more perfect children that she could not possibly love more. She had found unexpected friends in Emily and Mike. She marveled at how far she had come in such short a time, and offered a silent prayer that this time she did not screw it up.
