Rippin Riders

UEP Systems really isn't trying anymore with this game engine. If you've played the first two Cool Boarders games on the Playstation, you've already played this game. The controls are nearly the same (despite the addition of analog) and the gameplay is simply stale by today's standards. It's pretty much a racing game on snowboards. You do the occasional stunt and you get a speed boost. They did add multiple paths and some hidden short cuts but it does little to expand the game. The stages also lack good design and believablity. I also don't understand why all the jump and trick areas are limited, but they are. Believe me, you'll get bored quickly going through the single player mode. I did however like the 2 player "Line Mode" where during a competitive race the screen can be pushed back and forth depending upon your performance. There's nothing like smashing your brother's (who ever) screen into a 1/4 inch strip of viewability. But beyond this feature, Rippin Riders just doesn't show on anything done before in this genre.

Category Rating How & Why?
Graphics 6 Hi-Res and 60fps / Nice Character Design & Layout / Tracks are generally Bland
Music 6 Music is of a Generic Hip-Hop, Punk, Techno Flavor / Commentator gets Annoying
Gameplay 6 Sound Control Set-Up / Trick and Jump Areas are Ridiculously Limited / Hidden Short-Cuts and Multiple Paths are Welcome / 2 Player Line Mode is Fun whereas 1 Player is less than Gratifying...
Innovation 4 A Racing Game with a Gen-X Snowboarding Theme / Pretty much the same old game as the 1st two Cool Boarder titles...
Replay 4 Tricks, though There, aren't Really Used that much / It's Pretty Much a Racing Game and little else / Very Limited Number of Stages and Extras

Overall 5.2
