Golden Axe

This is my first time playing Golden Axe and I still don't get the appeal behind this series. It features weaksauce graphics and glitched-to-hell gameplay. An enemy standing above my character can wail on me all day long while I can't touch him. Instead I gotta line-up face to face with the bastard before it'll register my hit. The hit detection is just plain horrible and inexcusable especially in a game of this type. And the magic system is a nice gimmick but you very rarely get to build it upto full power and the damage it causes seems very minimal. On top of that you battle the same enemies over and over (there's maybe a variety of five). And after defeating a boss you'll be seeing him again as a peon bad guy. You're better off visiting Knights of the Round or King of Dragons on the SNES if you're looking for a real fantasy brawler.

Category Rating How & Why?
Graphics 4 Neat Fantasy Theme / Stiff Animation & Overall Ugly Details / Little Variety with Enemies
Music 4 Mostly Muffled Soundeffects / Soundtrack doesn't do the Fantasy Theme Justice
Gameplay 3 Nice Magic System but is Rarely Used / Limited Set of Moves and Loads of Hit Detection Glitches
Innovation 2 Your Traditional Side-Scrolling Brawler with a Medievel Theme / Lack of Polish and Fine-Tuning really hurt the end of result
Replay 2 3 Characters to Play with / Game is Easy to Beat despite Shortcomings / Maybe the Nostalgic will get a kick out of Golden Axe

Overall 3.0
