Killer Instinct Gold 64

Killer Instinct is one of those fighters that you either love or hate. Gameplay-wise it's all about wild combos & non-stop attacking. Unfortunately the only way to prevent an attack is to constantly block since there are no counters or reversals. It kind of ruins the balance of the game, but it's livable. I should also mention that the characters spew out gallons upon gallons of blood when they are hit. It's not necessary, but a decent eye-pleaser none-the-less. The graphics aren't as smoothly animated as the arcade, but they work good enough for the N64. The original 2D backgrounds have been dropped for full 3D polyon stages. Which look just amazing & incredibly sharp. The camera even pans in & out. But the characters tend to get awfully blurry when it's upclose. Other than that, not much else has been added or changed to the basic game. You get the expected home modes such as Training & Survival, but then again nearly every fighter has those. It's a decent fighter, but Killer Instinct Gold is probably best left for it's original fans..

Category Rating How & Why?
Graphics 9 Sharp 3D Backdrops & Great 2D Animation / Sprites get a little too Blurry Up-Close
Music 8 Some Great Rock/Techno Tunes while others are So-So
Gameplay 8 All Kinds of Wild Combos to Chain / You Seem to Block an Awful Lot / Counters & Reversals are Virtually Non-Existent
Innovation 7 It's the KI 2 arcade translated to the N64 with 3D backgrounds / Doesn't Offer much New over other Fighters besides the Crazy Combo System
Replay 7 The Endings are Okay / Not Much in Terms of Secrets & Bonuses / Still a Good Little Fighter that Killer Instinct fans will Enjoy

Overall 7.8
