Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
LucasArts tried to do something creative with this title, but all the ideas it had seem like they were done half-assed. The only stage that really sparks any interest or fun for that matter is the 1st Level, the Hoth Battle Scene. It recreates what you saw in the movie perfectly. Imagine weaving in & out of the legs of those giant AT-ATs. All while you dodge an a barrage of laser fire & keep your ship from slamming into one of those transports. Cool as it is, the control is still limited. You can't barrel roll or do any stunts! You fly on flat plane, fire some shots, & rope yourself an AT-AT. More manuvers, please? The rest of the game is a Quake knock-off, just done in the 3rd-person perspective. So you run around alot, hit some switches, & slaughter yourself a bunch of Empire bad guys. Believe me, it gets old quick. Not to mention the enormous amount of fogging in the background. Hey I can't see where I'm going! I should also note that the control is very loose & your guy ends up "sliding" around alot. Very bad, especially when you have to make jumps over bottomless pits. The cinemas are mostly flat 2D cartoons with very little animation. It helps to flesh out the story which is pretty decent (Star War fans will eat it up), but it doesn't really matter with the game being so poor. So I can only recommend this title to the diehard Star Wars fans out there. All the other gamers should look for their N64 kicks somewhere else.
