Super Robot Wars F

Welcome to the 32-bit upgrade to this Famicom classic, Super Robot Wars F. It's basically your average strategy/war game, but with a twist. All the events and characters are taken right out of your favorite mecha anime. We're talking about everything from Go-Shogun, the Gundam series, & even Evangelion. The controls are simple. You can move & attack with an armada of characters on a 2D map. Depth has been added with having to worry about Armor/Weapon Upgrades, Unique Character Abilities, & even the customizing of your on-screen Character. Battles take place on a separate screen. The characters follow through in a battle that you really have no control over except for the initial attack. Here the characters fight, block, & counterattack based on their level. Sorta like in Ogre Battle. In other words you're orchestrating a grand-scale battle. Everything plays smoothly & steadily. Even though it can feel too long & little tedious at times. The maps & character designs aren't anything that are going to blow you away. They're pretty flat & life-less, but at least they work. And the characters are drawn Super-Deformed style. A plus or minus depending on how you look at it. Luckily there are few spots where they managed to throw in some anime cut scenes. Even though those are few and far between. However the music is pretty good. Sounding like cool ,funky, midi versions of those classic tunes we all know & love. Banpresto did throw in some other quirps as well. The best being the "Karoake Mode". You select one of several mecha themes to play. Then, a scene using in-game graphics is performed. And time for karoake as the lyrics start to scroll across the bottom screen. Like I said before the game itself is pretty average. But the ability to play as Anime Mechas & the other fun little options make it something a little more redeeming. Mecha fans will probably enjoy this more than anybody.
