Gex: enter the gecko

Gex: Enter the Gecko is a humorous and an enjoyable take on 3D platform games. Though the graphic stylings and game play design follow Mario 64 pretty closely, there's enough variety to make Gex enjoyable all on its own. All the stages have a Hollywood theme behind them; and Gex will dress accordingly to fit his environment. For instance, during the Spooky Mansion stages Gex dawns a Dracula outfit. And in the Star Wars inspired level, Gex puts on a bulky Space Suit. During the course of the game, Gex will make humorous comments. But despite having over 200 one-liners, his jokes still get old pretty fast. Your main goal is to collect remote controls that open more stages, and ultimately lead you to the final boss. But getting to each remote calls upon a player with good platform skills and the ability to solve quirky puzzles. All in all, the game is a good exercise in 3D platform action (much like Mario 64). But then again, that's the sort of thing that hurts this game. You just can't help but compare it to Mario 64 because so many ideas and elements seem borrowed from the famous N64 title. And when both games are set next to each other, I'd rather play Mario 64 in all honesty. But if you're a gamer who can't enough of this genre (or your not sick of it yet), Gex: Enter the Gecko ain't too shabby.
