Test Drive 4
If you want a racing game to get noticed (especially when racing titles are a dime a dozen) it had better offer something up over the competition. And Test Drive 4 has got nothing on the likes of Gran Turismo and R4. Let's start with the gameplay. There's nothing wrong with the control set-up. The real problem stems from the lame tracks, which have few turns and little else in terms of challenge. Sure there's the traffic and weary police-cars, but they do little to spice things up. The pace seems pretty slow and you don't get that adrenaline rush that other racers induce. And while we're discussing the game's tracks, I should also mention how realistic and yes boring they are. There's little to no structures to be seen and the few surprises are pretty small and forgettable (example - wow, look at the tiny balloons in the distance...uh, great). The world is pretty lifeless in Test Drive 4 despite looking real. Okay, let's stop beating this dead horse - you can find the same things in other racing titles better executed. Check out Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit if you want something along the lines of a Test Drive title.
Category | Rating | How & Why? |
Graphics | 6 | Realistic, but Incredibly Boring RaceTracks / Some Minor Background Pop-In / Nice Looking Rides |
Music | 6 | At least the Soundeffects sound Okay... |
Gameplay | 5 | Straight Forward Racing Scheme / Tracks Don't Offer Much Variety or Enthusiasm / the Game gets Old Quick |
Innovation | 3 | What? Another Brain-Dead Racing Game / I'll stick with Gran Turismo or Ridge Racer Type 4 - at least they are fun... |
Replay | 2 | Racing Offers No Frills in this Title / Police-Chases are somewhat Amusing / Ultimately there's many Better Racing Titles on the Market for the Playstation |
