Vagrant Story

I'll admit it, I believed in the hype and all the critically acclaimed reviews for Vagrant Story. That's why I made sure to purchase the game as soon as it store shelves. And though the opening is amazing, when you get settled into the game things quickly calm down. You're treated to dungeon after dungeon of repetitve and boring gameplay. Usually involving the occasional block puzzle, fighting a few scattered enemies, and the huge boss fight at the end of the stage. Sure there's lots of weapons of equipment to manage, but I can hardly get excited about that. The balancing of the game is all over the scale too. You might whoop the 1st stage boss without a problem and then get stuck on the 2nd stage boss, dying many times over before you figure out the trick to beating it. And that brings me to another point. I don't particularly like equipping and de-equipping my weapons just so I can figure out which ones are best on certain enemies or because they need replacing due to wear and tear. Sure the game is pretty and it's got a great story (like most Square games), but those are the only true highlights of Vagrant Story. Maybe if there were more special in-game events and some variety in the action I would have enjoyed it. I know there's some "Square-heads" who are bound to argue otherwise, but this is my review and that's how I feel. Check it out before you take any permanent actions.
