Tilk

Tilk is one of the best examples of what has become a niche market in Japan. These kinds of titles are made up of two things - a Simple Strategy Game and a Gimmicky Theme. For the most part they're there in the first place to do a cash-run (ie, to sell a junky game by using it's hot license). But the wierd thing is that "Tilk" is not a license I've ever heard of unless it's a really obscure cartoon over in Japan. Anyhow the gameplay is pretty Simple and Easy to Understand even for those people who are uninitiated in the Japanese language. But that doesn't mean it's any fun. Your attacks and magic lack any genuine depth and in fact most battles are just plain boring. And there's very little advantage in leveling up your characters. But what really hurts it is the noticable loading time for the animated Attacks. Not to mention when a battle is won there's usually about a 10-20 minute cinema that can't keep skipped over. And for us who don't speak the Japanese language you simply won't care about the plot or why things are happening. Which is why I highly recommend you be fluent if you decide to purchase this game or if you are truly wanting to enjoy the story. It's not neccessarily a bad game, but it isn't a good one at that either. If you're looking for a real Strategy title that has thick gameplay and a rich story you should probably check out Final Fantasy Tactics on the PSX or Ogre Battle for import Sega Saturn.

Category Rating How & Why?
Graphics 7 Large Anime-Style Characters with In-Game Cinemas & Battles / Strategy Visuals Lack the same Flare / Some Noticable Loading when Attacks Occur
Music 6 Average Soundeffects / Sounds like some Decent Japanese Voice-Acting (that's if you understand it)
Gameplay 4 A Typical Strategy Game with a Comical Kid-Safe Plot / Simple & Easy to Understand Controls / Lots of Cinema inbetween the Short Action / You Can't Skip Any of the Cinemas!!!
Innovation 5 There's alot of Games like this in Japan - Usually a Simple Strategy Game with a Gimmicky Theme / We Certainly Do without these Kinds of Games
Replay 5 The Strategy Part is Overly Simple and will Bore Most Hardened-Veterans / The Cinemas are L-O-N-G and Can't be Skipped / Storyline is Completely in Japanese and will lose most US Gamers
