Scio History
A man by the name of Hiram A. Snyder discovered oil in Scio.
The oil boom lasted a little over a year. It began in
1898 and ended in 1899. There were many ways Scio was
affected by the oil boom. There was an increase in
population. Many workers were needed for building oil
derricks. Trees were cut down. There were many oil wells
which caused many fires. Large amounts of saloons were
built. They needed heavy equipment for the oil industry.
When equipment was moved, it caused mud to ooze over the
streets and ruin them. Many criminals came to the village
because there was a lot of money there. The college was the
main industry of the village before oil was found. When
they discovered oil the college thought they would get money,
but they didn't. The college closed ten years after they
discovered oil.
- This is a flag that was made to help remember important
things in Scio and Harrison County. The word Scio comes
from the Latin language meaning "To know about things."
The students from the Scio College helped to change the name
from New Market. The symbol of the lamp is for learning.
The oil derricks remind us of the oil boom in 1898. The cup
is for the importance of the Scio Pottery. Agriculture
is also important in Harrison County. Crops such as
corn and wheat are grown. The county used to be number
one in the production of sheep and wool. The colors at the
bottom are the colors of the school; past and present.
