Midsummer Night Slam

Midsummer Night Slam was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event, broadcast annually in June by the professional wrestling promotion MECCA. The first event took place on June 25, 2005, from the Frontier Fieldhouse in Chicago Ridge, Illinois. In 2007, the event was canceled and replaced by Punked Out. Midsummer Night Slam has the distinction of being the first MECCA event to host the Six-Man Melee match, known back then as Six Pack Apocalypse.

History

When MECCA began, its pay-per-view schedule was only bi-monthly. With the success of Bloody Valentine in February and The MECCA Challenge in April, it was announced that Midsummer Night Slam would debut in June. In April 2007, MECCA made the decision to increase their PPV schedule to one per month. New Dawn debuted in May, while Punked Out was moved to June, and Midsummer Night Slam was discontinued.

Background

Midsummer Night Slam was the third pay-per-view broadcast live by MECCA. It took place at the Frontier Fieldhouse in Chicago Ridge, Illinois, on June 25, 2005. The event was released on DVD via the MECCA website several weeks later. Its theme song was "Rebel Yell" by Billy Idol.

In mid-2005, CM Punk and his faction SELF were on a roll. Punk became the first holder of the MECCA Championship at The MECCA Challenge and had turned back the challenge of Alan Mayse in his first title defense at Punked Out. To decide his next challenger, MECCA authority Katie Piehl booked a Four Way Dance on the June 7 episode of Go Time between members of the Contender Star. However, with Nykk being taken out before the match, he was replaced by Cynric, who went on to win. Punk ran him down on the microphone two weeks later, but Cynric came out to confront him. Punk backed down, only to try and cheapshot Cynric. But Cynric was ready for it and sent Punk running from the ring.

After defeating Punk's protege Eddie Crowe at Punked Out, Nykk was ready to get back into the title picture. However, he was confronted by Low Ki, who ran down Nykk and accused him of not paying any dues in the wrestling business. Nykk and Ki ended up getting into it and Ki had to be restrained after trapping Nykk in the ropes and rendering him defenseless with his kicks. As a result, Nykk was not able to take part in the Four Way Dance the next week to determine the number one contender to the World Title. Nykk retaliated two weeks later, ambushing Low Ki after his match and rendering him helpless with a choke hold. He demanded that Ki accept his challenge for Midsummer Night Slam, and Ki accepted before Nykk rendered him unconscious.

Midsummer Night Slam 2006

Background

Midsummer Night Slam was broadcast live on pay-per-view on June 24, 2006. It emanated from the Lutheran Sports Center in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

At The MECCA Challenge II, Eddie Crowe won the MECCA Championship from Kevin Stone. The loss made Stone even more vicious than he already was, and it wasn't long before he worked his way back up the ladder. The rematch was signed for Midsummer Night Slam.

After their loss at the MECCA Challenge, The Dangerous Liaison was forced to split up. Ladies' Champion Gail Kim was now without backup, and with their alliance gone, LuFisto wasted no time in challenging her former partner to a title match. She received the shot at Punked Out, but was thwarted when Kim fled the arena with the belt, getting herself counted out. LuFisto requested a rematch with Kim under Hardcore rules, where there would be no count-outs, at Midsummer Night Slam. MECCA authority Katie Piehl granted her request.

Midsummer Night Slam was the first event to play host to the Six Pack Apocalypse, which would become an annual staple in MECCA. The match involved 25 of MECCA's top competitors and was in a gauntlet format. Six men started the match, and when one man was eliminated, the next man in the random order took his place. When the final six men were in the match, it would become Anything Goes, and the last man standing would win a shot at the MECCA Championship at Summertime Showdown in August. Competitors such as Nykk, Ronin Fox, The Pyro Twins, Trent Acid, and many more entered in the hopes of winning a title shot.
