History

When MECCA began, its pay-per-view schedule was only bi-monthly. With the success of its previous pay-per-views, it was announced that Scared Stiff would debut in October.

Scared Stiff 2005

Background

Scared Stiff was the fifth pay-per-view broadcast live by MECCA. It took place at the Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio, on October 29, 2005. The event was released on DVD via the MECCA website several weeks later. Its theme song was "Can't Repeat" by The Offspring.

By the fall of 2005, Nykk had become the second MECCA Champion. After many tough title defenses, he realized that the next pay-per-view would be in his hometown of Dayton, Ohio. No longer the hateful man he had previously been, Nykk offered the title shot to his longtime rival Ronin Fox, who had recently won a spot on the Contender Star. Nykk and Fox were then somewhat sidetracked when Eddie Crowe recruited The UK Wrecking Crew into his new version of SELF. Nykk and Fox lost to the UKWC by count-out on October 18, and then got beaten down by SELF until Cynric and Alan Mayse made the save. That led to an eight-man tag match the next week, where Fox accidentally nailed Nykk, leading to their team's loss. It was speculated on if it was actually an accident, and a shoving match ensued between the two.

In October 2005, SELF was in tatters. They had lost their leader back at Summer Showdown, and The Pyro Twins had also abandoned the group, leaving only Eddie Crowe and Trent Acid. After everything that had happened, the Pyro Twins were still reluctant to tear into Eddie, though they had no problem fighting Acid. When the four faced off in a tag match at At Your Own Risk, the Pyro Twins only targeted Acid until the very end, where they turned on Eddie and beat him to win the match. On October 11, Eddie responded by challenging his own brother Jay Crowe to a match at Scared Stiff, and then introduced the newest members of SELF, and the Pyro Twins' bitter rivals, the former Tag Team Champions The UK Wrecking Crew. The next week, the UKWC cost the Pyro Twins a chance at winning the tag titles, and the rest of SELF came down and commenced beating them down. Dusty was powerbombed through a flaming table, while Jay's shirt was simply lit on fire. Officials were able to put them out in time, and Jay was cleared to compete for the PPV. Dusty, in the meantime, volunteered to be one of four men in the first ever Stiff Strike Challenge, a 15 minute match where the winner would be the man with the most strikes at the end of the time limit, as long as a pinfall didn't occur before then.

Back at Midsummer Night Slam, Lisa Letty was betrayed during her match against Shadow for the MECCA Ladies' Championship. Shadow cheated to win the title, and joined The Dangerous Liaison afterward. They controlled the title picture throughout the summer, until Lisa won it back from Shadow at Summertime Showdown. Seeking her own rematch, Shadow worked her way through the ladies' division and was finally granted a title shot at Scared Stiff.

Scared Stiff 2006

Background

Scared Stiff was broadcast live on pay-per-view on October 28, 2006, and emanated from the Altria Theatre in Richmond, Virginia. The event theme song was "Call Me When You're Sober" by Evanescence.

After retaining the MECCA Tag Team Championship over The Pyro Twins at At Your Own Risk in 2006, Ronin Fox set his sights on the MECCA Championship, held by the Pyro Twins' fellow EDJ member Eddie Crowe. Fox cited the fact that Eddie had beaten everyone, but hadn't beaten him in a title defense a few months before. Fox got his match, and tried to sneak attack Eddie on the October 18 episode of Go Time, but Eddie seemed to be one step ahead of him. Tensions escalated the next week, as an unknown incident set off a brawl between the two backstage.

For a year after losing to The UK Wrecking Crew in the International Invitational Tag Team Tournament, The Pyro Twins chased their rivals in an attempt to get a rematch. The UKWC antagonized the Pyro Twins every chance they got, including pretending to befriend Jay's brother Eddie Crowe only to turn on him, filing a restraining order, and hiring special security for their matches. Finally, the Pyro Twins got them in a match for the MECCA Tag Team Championship at The MECCA Challenge II. The Pyro Twins prevailed, and the UKWC took a hiatus from MECCA. They returned full time at Summertime Showdown to cost the Pyro Twins the tag belts. After coming up on the losing end against Eddie Crowe at At Your Own Risk, the UKWC stated their intent to reclaim the tag belts. However, the Pyro Twins interrupted them and goaded them into accepting a Ring of Fire match with them at Scared Stiff, with the only way to win being to set your opponents on fire.

Scared Stiff 2007

Background

Scared Stiff was broadcast live on pay-per-view on October 27, 2007, and emanated from the Vanderbilt University Memorial Gym in Nashville, Tennessee.

At Summertime Showdown, Eddie Crowe won a shot the MECCA World Heavyweight Championship. He thought he was going to get that shot against the man who had taken the title from him in May, Ronin Fox, and was slated to meet him at At Your Own Risk. However, Fox lost the belt to Bryan Danielson a couple of weeks before the show. Since the Fox vs. Eddie match was already advertised, MECCA executor Katie Piehl announced that Eddie would receive his shot at the winner of Danielson's defense at the PPV. Danielson retained, and he and Eddie were signed to a match for Scared Stiff. However, Fox and The House of Lords were determined to get the title back in their camp and stuck their noses into business between Eddie and Danielson, trying to convince each man that the other had secretly joined the House of Lords, a story made more credible by the recent acquisition of longtime fan favorite Alan Mayse. Eddie and Danielson were both adamant that they had nothing to do with the House of Lords, but there was enough distrust that each man grew suspicious of the other. On October 24, a misunderstanding during a match against the House of Lords resulted in a brawl between Eddie and Danielson just before their match at the PPV.

In the summer of 2007, The Pyro Twins had won back the MECCA Tag Team Championship, and brought the belts into The House of Lords. They ran through everyone in their path until former ROH World Tag Team Champions The Briscoes arrived in MECCA. They wasted no time in attacking the Pyro Twins and staking their claim as the top team in MECCA. The Briscoes went on a winning streak that shortly earned them a title match against the Pyro Twins and The UK Wrecking Crew in a Triangle Match at At Your Own Risk. The Pyro Twins managed to come out on top, but eventually lost the belts to the team of Delirious and Matt Sydal on the next episode of Go Time. This didn't deter the Briscoes, who wanted a big victory over the Pyro Twins. They would get their chance when they were signed to meet the Pyro Twins in a tag team match at Scared Stiff.

At At Your Own Risk, Delirious debuted Shelirious as his partner in a mixed tag match against Nykk and the Ladies' Champion Lisa Letty. Delirious and Shelirious won, and as a result of the stipulation received a guaranteed title shot of their choice whenever they wanted it. Shelirious opted to use her shot at the MECCA Ladies' Championship right away, beating Lisa in an impromptu match. The offense she used resembled that used by Daizee Haze, who had previously been denied another shot at the belt. Lisa thought it was obvious they were one and the same, but was unable to win the title back from Shelirious. Another House of Lords member, Shadow, stepped in and claimed the next title shot at Scared Stiff, vowing to bring the belt back to the House of Lords.

Scared Stiff 2008

Background

Scared Stiff was broadcast live on pay-per-view on October 25, 2008, and emanated from the Old National Center in Indianapolis, Indiana.

At Summertime Showdown, Austin Lee challenged the World Champion Anubis for the MECCA World Heavyweight Championship. Although unsuccessful, Austin offered his hand in sportsmanship after the match, but Anubis blindsided him with a cheap shot. Anubis would go on a rampage over the next few weeks, turning over a new leaf after realizing that everyone was out to get his title. He turned against his own partner, and Austin's brother Tristan Lee got involved as well. Austin vowed to win another shot at the belt, and Katie Piehl granted it to him after a string of wins over the first couple weeks of October. After Austin came out to help The Wild Wolf and Tristan as they were being assaulted by Anubis, they brawled out of the arena. Katie Piehl was quick to respond, making the match at Scared Stiff under Anything Goes rules.

The event would see the rivalries between four of MECCA's former World Champions come to a head as well. There had been issues building between Nykk, Ronin Fox, Eddie Crowe, and Bryan Danielson for years. Since forming The House of Lords, Nykk caused Eddie to lose the World Title to Fox back at New Dawn back in 2007. When Danielson won the belt from Fox later that year, they tried to sabotage his defense against Eddie the previous year at Scared Stiff. In late 2008, the old feud rekindled at At Your Own Risk when Fox and Danielson met as part of a Four Corners Match for the MECCA Toughman Championship and Nykk took on Eddie in singles action. Eddie came out on top, which caused Nykk to ambush him on Go Time. Eddie was quick to get a match against Nykk and Fox for Scared Stiff, and chose his old rival Bryan Danielson to be his partner.

Throughout the summer, Naomi Leach had feuded with Kelly Schweickart over the MECCA Ladies' Championship. During the July 30 broadcast of Go Time, Naomi went after Kelly, only to be stopped by Sara Del Rey, who seemingly was trying to calm Naomi down. But it turned out to be a ruse, as Del Rey attacked Naomi and joined up with Kelly, seconding her for many matches and also teaming with her. Despite the alliance, Kelly was unable to win the Ladies' Title. Sara felt that meant that her title shot was coming next, and was granted a match against Naomi for Scared Stiff.

Scared Stiff 2009

Background

Scared Stiff was broadcast live on pay-per-view on October 24, 2009, and emanated from the Arthur Ashe Athletic Center in Richmond, Virginia. The show's theme song was "V is for Vampire" by Powerman 5000.

At The MECCA Challenge V, Robbie Reno won the Round Robin Faction War along with his fellow members of EEE, granting them all a guaranteed shot at the World Title whenever they wanted. With the dissolution of EEE during the summer, Robbie was looking to move up the card. After gaining confidence by winning a big Four Corners Match in the main event of the September 30 edition of Go Time, Reno felt the time was right. He cashed in his title shot against the World Champion Anubis for Scared Stiff.

Back in the midst of MECCA's feud against ROH in August, Katie Piehl booked the first ever Double Jeopardy Match with both the MECCA and ROH Titles on the line. She let the champions choose the other two opponents in the match, and looking to get out of a competitive encounter, ROH World Champion Austin Aries chose Kavian, who was primarily a middling tag team wrestler. But Nykk, enraged at Aries and ROH screwing him out of a title win at Liberty or Death, wanted another shot at Aries. He attacked Kavian in the back before the match, rendering him unable to compete, and took his spot in the match. Over the next several weeks, Bloodlust would appear in the stands, intently watching Nykk's matches and holding up a sign that read Mortem Tyrannis (Latin for "Death to tyrants"). On the September 23 edition of Go Time, they ambushed Nykk and his partner Ronin Fox as they were preparing to compete in the main event, bloodying Nykk and nearly causing him to miss the match. A couple of weeks later, they caused Fox to lose the MECCA Toughman Championship and laid Nykk out again when he tried to make the save. Katie Piehl quickly announced a match between the two teams for Scared Stiff. The very next week, Nykk and Fox won the MECCA World Tag Team Championship, and volunteered to put the belts on the line against Bloodlust. Katie agreed, but only if they could earn the shot by beating one of them in a singles contest on the October 21 Go Time. Nykk beat Kavian, but Torea managed to defeat Fox later in the night via count-out to secure their title shot.

Throughout the ROH vs. MECCA feud, Takeshi Morishima was an unstoppable monster, mowing down everyone he faced on the MECCA roster. He was a part of Team ROH during the Perimeter of Pain match at Summertime Showdown, but his team lost and were run out of MECCA. However, due to being on the Contender Star, Morishima and his manager Dave Prazak were able to stick around. He was unsuccessful in capturing the World Title from Anubis at At Your Own Risk, and had also drawn the ire of Eddie Crowe after a disastrous tag match where they were forced to team together. Morishima had fulfilled all of his dates and looked to return to Japan, but Eddie wanted to take Morishima's spot on the Contender Star and knock him down a peg once and for all. Katie Piehl negotiated with Prazak, and they came to an agreement with the match being signed for Scared Stiff.

Scared Stiff 2010

Background

Scared Stiff was broadcast live on pay-per-view on October 30, 210, and emanated from the Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis, Missouri.

On the September 29 edition of Go Time, Austin Lee won his way back onto the Contender Star with a victory over The Wild Wolf. Wolf went on to win a Wild Card Battle Royale later in the night to win the right to face World Champion Nykk the next week in MECCA's Japanese debut. On October 13, Lee complained publicly about the fact that he won a spot on the Contender Star, yet the man he defeated jumped the line for a title shot. MECCA authority Katie Piehl told him if he could prove himself by the time the Japanese tour concluded, he could have his title shot. Lee didn't fare well later that night, being pinned in a tag team match. But on October 20, he defeated fellow Contender Star member Ronin Fox in the main event of Go Time. Afterward, Nykk came out and accepted Lee's challenge for Scared Stiff. The next week, they met as part of a six-man tag. As Nykk was about to defeat Lee, the knee injury he had acquired facing the Wild Wolf acted up, allowing Austin to capitalize and score the victory heading into the pay-per-view.

The Absence of Light had been running roughshod over MECCA for some time and put a number of competitors out of action. Jimmy Jacobs had made a number of enemies, including Nykk and his partner Ronin Fox. Jacobs teamed with Dusty Schneble to meet them in tag team action on September 29, and during the match Fox accidentally busted open Jacobs. Jacobs went berserk, causing his team to get disqualified. Later that night, Jacobs reminded the MECCA fans of what he did to Jay Crowe and Eddie Crowe, and declared that Fox was next. On October 13, the Absence of Light cost Fox a shot at the Toughman Championship and tied him up in the ropes afterward. When Fox refused to give himself up to the darkness, Jacobs told Schneble to make him bleed. Before they could do that, they were run off by Nykk wielding a steel chair. On the October 27 edition of Go Time, Fox attacked Jacobs before his match, which prompted Jacobs to make an appearance during the six-man tag Fox was a part of in the main event. They brawled out of the arena, but no one really knew what happened. At Scared Stiff, Fox revealed that he had broken his wrist during the melee, but told Jacobs that he found a replacement, before reintroducing Jay Crowe to the MECCA fans.

On September 22, Ladies' World Champion Naomi Leach and her mentor LuFisto were victims of a backstage attack from Amber O'Neal and Sassy Stephie. LuFisto's leg was injured during the brawl, but she competed in the tag team match anyway, but was subject of an attack just as ruthless, eventually causing the ref to stop the match. LuFisto was badly hurt, and she was forced out of competition. This enraged Naomi, who took it out on Amber at At Your Own Risk to the point where she was disqualified. Naomi got a proper win over Amber on the October 6 edition of Go Time, and then turned her attention toward Stephie. Stephie worked her way into contention for the title while running from Naomi every chance she got. A title match was signed for October 30 at Scared Stiff.

Scared Stiff 2011

Background

Scared Stiff was broadcast live on pay-per-view on October 29, 2011, and emanated from the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Eddie Crowe had become a three-time MECCA Champion after his controversial win over Jamie Chan at At Your Own Risk, with help from his new manager Nykk. As a result of Chan attacking the referee after the loss, he was fined and told he would not get first chance at a rematch against Crowe. But Nykk and Eddie's celebration was cut short when he was challenged by Nykk's best friend and former tag team partner, Ronin Fox, who immediately started planting doubts in Eddie's mind about Nykk's loyalty. On October 26, Fox got involved in the Chan vs. Crowe non-title rematch, leading to Chan getting the victory. But it was left a little dubious on if Nykk was trying to help his new client, or secretly backing Ronin Fox.

Still frustrated over losing the title, Jamie Chan was without direction until teaming with The Wild Wolf on the October 12 edition of Go Time. They lost their match due to miscommunication, and neither man was happy about it. Wolf accused Chan of getting in the way, and Chan was paranoid that Wolf would turn his back on him the same way Eddie Crowe had done. They teamed again the next week, and agreed to stay out of one another's way. But this time it was Wolf who got in the way, leading to victory for their opponents. Realizing they were unable to work together, they decided to take out their frustrations by facing off at Scared Stiff.

After forming an alliance with Sassy Stephie and ruining the match for the MECCA Ladies' World Championship at Summertime Showdown, Portia Perez and her new ally defeated Naomi Leach and Ladies' Champion Nevaeh at At Your Own Risk in a Tables Match. Perez came out of it the number one contender for the Ladies' Title. She faced Nevaeh on the next episode of Go Time, but lost by disqualification. Nevaeh wanted to finish Perez once and for all as a challenger, and decided to clear her entire schedule so she could get a decisive victory. She challenged Perez for Scared Stiff, and Perez eagerly agreed.

Scared Stiff 2012

Background

Scared Stiff was broadcast live on pay-per-view on October 27, 2012, and emanated from the Michael J. Hagan Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Marcus Kavian and Ronin Fox had been feuding since the spring, and it reached a boiling point by Summertime Showdown, where Fox beat Kavian to win the MECCA World Championship. Kavian wanted his rematch, but since Fox was not on the Contender Star when he defeated him, it meant Kavian didn't have an empty spot to take. Kavian managed to work his way into a match with a member of the Contender Star, and at At Your Own Risk he defeated Tristan Lee. But Fox beat Kavian to the punch after he defeated Tristan's brother Austin Lee on the October 10 episode of Go Time, offering to put the title on the line at Scared Stiff.

Caroline Couture had come close to becoming the Ladies' World Champion at Summertime Showdown in a Four Corners Match, but champion Naomi Leach was able to shove another opponent into her and break up the submission hold she had on another participant just before the tap out. Leach would go on to get the win, but Couture was not done with her. On the following episode of Go Time, Couture scored a win over Naomi in an non-title match, which got her a title shot two weeks later. Couture got Naomi into a submission, but Naomi tapped out after grabbing the ropes, tricking Couture into thinking she had won and releasing the hold. Naomi was able to come back and get the win, but Couture wanted one more shot. She won a number one contender's Four Corners Match on October 10, and it would soon be announced that she would receive her title shot at Scared Stiff in a few weeks' time.

Ever since Gran Akuma had won the MECCA Toughman Championship in a Four Corners Match, he had developed a reputation as the King of the Multi-Man Matches, preferring to defend his title against multiple opponents as he was virtually unbeatable. This didn't sit well with former champion Drake Younger, who had been screwed out of the title in the Four Corners Match. He tried to get Akuma one on one, but he kept avoiding the former champion. Younger could not get one up on Akuma in multi-man matches, so he went to MECCA Authority Cynric to see what he could do about it. Cynric said that Akuma had entered the Stiff Strike Challenge, another multi-man match, at Scared Stiff. Cynric needed one more volunteer for the match, so he told Younger if he could win that match and beat Akuma at his own game, he would give him his one on one title match. Younger eagerly accepted, but he would have to contend with Akuma, as well as Eddie Crowe and Low Ki, who had also volunteered for the match.

Scared Stiff 2013

Background

Scared Stiff was broadcast live on pay-per-view on October 26, 2013, and emanated from the Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio.

Upon finally getting his shot at the MECCA World Championship at At Your Own Risk, Torea was cost his match against Eddie Crowe after The Circle of Trust got involved. Torea wanted a rematch, and he was granted one on the October 9 episode of Go Time. The match went to a one hour time limit draw with neither Torea or Crowe able to get the win over the other. The Circle of Trust tried to deny Torea another title shot a week later, but MECCA Authority Cynric intervened, saying that he would give Torea one more shot at Crowe at Scared Stiff, and this time it would an Iron Man Match, where whoever got the most falls within the one hour time limit would be the champion.

Naomi Leach had been trying to ingratiate herself back into the MECCA Ladies' World Championship title picture, and spent past six weeks getting involved in the feud between champion Melissa Flash and her rivals Caroline Couture and Nicole Matthews. The two sides met in a tag team strap match at At Your Own Risk, but Leach turned on Flash during the match, whipping her with the strap. After the match, she brutalized Flash, hanging her with the leather strap until even their opponents had to intervene. Flash wanted her revenge, which was Leach's plan all along, because she knew Flash would put the title on the line to get her hands on her. Flash didn't care, and the two were signed to a title match for Scared Stiff.

Ronin Fox had been the victim of a split personality all summer, but with Sombre stoking his darker side, he soon swayed toward the more ruthless and aggressive version of himself. The transformation was completed at At Your Own Risk, and on the following episode of Go Time, Fox revealed his new persona, the dark and wolf-like Fenris. He immediately had success, and during a six-man tag, he injured Marcus Kavian after blasting him in the kidneys with a steel chair. Kavian confronted him the next week, but Cynric intervened, revealing that he was putting them in a match at Scared Stiff, with Kavian's spot on the Contender Star up for grabs.

Scared Stiff 2014

Background

Scared Stiff was broadcast live on pay-per-view on October 25, 2014, and emanated from the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City.

On the October 1 episode of Go Time, World Champion Drake Younger suddenly announced his departure from MECCA, stating that it was his last night and he would take the belt with him. Cynric put a stop to that, stating that Torea would be given one last shot at the MECCA World Championship for Younger's last match. However, Torea was found unconscious in the back and was deemed unable to compete by doctors. Cynric chose Marcus Kavian to take his place, and Kavian would save the day and win the World Title. His celebration was short-lived, however, as Fenris demanded a title shot. He won a Four Corners Match for the right to face Kavian at Scared Stiff, but followed up by claiming he knew a secret about Kavian that would shake the foundation of MECCA, which prompted Kavian to immediately challenge him to a fight. He was stopped by Torea, who told him Fenris was nothing but a bag of hot air. But after winning his match later in the night, Fenris tried to reveal the secret, only to be attacked by Kavian and sending Fenris fleeing to the back.

After winning the MECCA Legacy Championship from Aaron Glover at At Your Own Risk, Terrence Bolton continued to antagonize his former partner by preventing him from winning a petition match so he could get a rematch. After this happened twice, Glover complained to Cynric on the October 15 episode of Go Time. It was decided that with all the bad feelings between Glover, Bolton, Melissa Flash and Naomi Leach, he would book a mixed tag match for later in the night, and if Glover and Flash won, he would get his rematch for the Legacy Title. Glover and Flash would go on to defeat Bolton and Leach and win his title shot for Scared Stiff. Bolton blamed Leach for the loss, and ended up dumping her as a result.

After both men prevented one another from winning the World Title at At Your Own Risk, the feud continued between Ryan Andrews and Eddie Crowe. Andrews stated that he would not go on and try to win the title again until he finished this thing with Eddie, and challenged him to a one on one match at Scared Stiff. Eddie accepted the challenge, but the next week The Peacemakers met The Circle of Trust in tag team action. Andrews defeated Gary Kopp for the win and invited Crowe back into the ring afterward to continue their war, but Crowe opted to turn tail and wait for their match at the pay-per-view.

Scared Stiff 2015

Background

Scared Stiff was broadcast live on pay-per-view on October 24, 2015, and emanated from the Forbes Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

On the September 29 episode of Go Time, Terrence Bolton goaded Torea into defending the MECCA World Championship after his failure to win it at At Your Own Risk. Torea accepted the match, and lost the title after interference from The Motor City Machine Guns. The next week as Bolton was bragging about becoming the new champion, he was confronted by The Wild Wolf. Wolf revealed that his contract in MECCA was up and he would be leaving at the end of the month, but before that he wanted to do the one thing he was never able to do and win the World Title. Bolton refused a title match, and then blindsided Wolf, who fought back and sent Bolton fleeing from ringside. His title match request was granted by MECCA Authority Cynric for later in the night. The Motor City Machine Guns tried to interfere again, but as they had the ref distracted, Torea ran in and helped Wolf get the pin on Bolton. Wolf reveled in finally becoming champion, while Bolton demanded a rematch the next week. Wolf accepted the challenge for Scared Stiff, and said that if he won he would graciously step down and return the title before leaving the company.

After Melissa Flash used some trickery to reclaim the MECCA Ladies' World Championship at Summertime Showdown, Serena Deeb understandably wanted a chance to get the title back. She fought her way back into contention, and Cynric allowed her one chance at regaining the title, but said win, lose, or draw there would be no rematches. They both accepted, and both women wanted something extra after their wars over the summer. It was decided that the Ladies' Title would be put on the line at Scared Stiff in a Last Woman Standing Match to settle the feud once and for all.

After failing to win the MECCA World Tag Team Championship in the Three Way Dance at At Your Own Risk, The Pyro Twins were gracious enough to admit they were beaten when they were eliminated by The Young Bucks. But they were still trying to get into contention for the belts, and knew they would have to get past the Bucks to get there. The Pyro Twins challenged them to a match, but it was met with radio silence from the Young Bucks. The Pyro Twins confronted them backstage two weeks later, and feeling backed into a corner, the Jacksons accepted. The next week, they got the jump on the Pyro Twins and poured lighter fluid all over them. Before they could do anything else, officials arrived to separate the teams.
