The title is meant to represent MECCA's Midwestern heritage, and was introduced as the prize of a sixteen-man single elimination tournament in the summer of 2012. In mid-2012, the Authority of MECCA, Cynric, decided to introduce a new championship. On the July 4 episode of Go Time, he announced that there would be a sixteen-man tournament held over the following weeks, with the finals to take place in Detroit at Summertime Showdown. The winner would be crowned the first MECCA Legacy Champion. The title was meant to pay tribute to MECCA's Midwestern heritage, from back when they were the Midwestern Establishment of Competitive Combat Arts. Alex Shelley would win the tournament and become the first champion on August 25.
Marcus Kavian is the longest reigning champion thus far at 302 days. The shortest reigning champion has been Gran Akuma, whose first title reign lasted seven days. Akuma, Bolton, and Aaron Glover are the only men to have held the title twice.
On December 15, 2012, the Legacy Championship was unified with the MECCA Toughman Championship by Gary Kopp.
