MECCA Toughman Championship

The MECCA Toughman Championship is a defunct professional wrestling championship in MECCA. The title has been defended on MECCA's shows in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom throughout its history. It was introduced as the prize of the Toughman Tournament held in early 2006 and deactivated on December 15, 2012, when it was unified with the MECCA Legacy Championship.

History

Since MECCA's roster was small in the beginning, a second singles championship was not promoted right away. But in late 2005, it was felt the time was right to introduce another title. The philosophy behind the Toughman Title was not to think of it as a secondary title, but one that could challenge the MECCA Championsip in prominence, featuring title matches with slightly tweaked rules to make them more brutal. It was thought that while the Toughman Champion may not be the best wrestler in the company, he could be thought of as the toughest.

On the December 28, 2005 episode of Go Time a 24-man Toughman Tournament began. It consisted of 12 first round matches, in which the 12 winners would do battle in four Triangle Matches in the next round, with the winners meeting in the semi-finals in a special double fall four-way match. When the first fall ended, the winner and loser would leave the match, with the winner going on to the finals and the loser being eliminated. The remaining two men would then contest for the remaining spot in the finals. Alan Mayse and Trent Acid were the competitors who won through to the finals, and MECCA authority Katie Piehl made the finals a Ladder Match, which would take place at The MECCA Challenge II on April 29, 2006.

In late 2012, following Drake Younger regaining the title from Gran Akuma, in which Akuma suffered a concussion, MECCA authority Cynric announced that the board of directors had decided to discontinue the Toughman Title. A Unification Match was made for End of the Line, in which Legacy Champion Gary Kopp became the final champion.

The longest reigning champion was Alan Mayse, whose first reign lasted 287 days. The shortest reigning champion was also Alan Mayse, whose second reign only lasted one day. The next shortest reigning champion was Marcus Kavian, whose first reign lasted six days. The Wild Wolf held the record for the most championships, with four title reigns.
