The present building, of course, would not be recognized by many early graduates if they were to return after an absence of many years. The "core" of the building was built in 19__. Very little of that building is visible from the outside at the present. An addition was made in 1927, which covered the old nucleus on the north and on the east. As the school continued to grow and additional space was needed, another wing was added in 1938 which covered the south side of that old building, so that is has been almost completely surrounded. Since that last addition to the pyysical plant, the student body has continued to grow with such rapidity that the building is now "bulging at the seams". Our present enrollment of about 725 is far more than the building was ever intended to house. During the last few years, many lower grade students have attended classes in unusual places--on the stage, in what was once a storeroom, and in dressing rooms. The departure of the high school students next year promises to relieve the congestion somewhat--- at least for a year or two.

In the field of athletics our school has made a name for itself which has been the envy of many and earned for our teams the nickname, "Mighty Mohawks." This record of excellence in basketball had its beginning back in 1923 when Waynesburg won the first Stark County Basketball Tournament Championsip. Since that time W.H.S. has appeared in the championship game of the tournament more times than any other team and has won the championship more times than any other Stark County school. During the span of years since 1923, we have succeeded in winning all sorts of championships except the one which we all desired---the State Championship. For the record, we present the following resume of the four attempts at the State Title. We were a member of the "Sweet 16" (the last 16 teams left in the tournament competition) on eight occasions. Allthough two other teams match this record, no team in the state exceeds it. We are one of the two schools in the state to have been Consolation Champs (1946) since this game was only played on two occasions. Here is the record:

1934 Bellpoint 19 WHS 17 (1st Round)

1940 New Castle 53 WHS 35 (1st Round)

1942 Somerset 44 WHS 26 (Semi-finals)

1943 Tipp City 34 WHS 31 (Semi-finals)

1946 Worthington 24 WHS 23 (Semi-finals)

1946 Bradford 17 WHS 19 (Consolation)

1951 Grand Rapids 52 WHS 51 (Finals)

1952 Nelsonville 45 WHS 43 (Semi-finals)

1953 Canfield 54 WHS 42 (1st Round)
