Please remember to sign our guestbook on the main page! Thank You!
The Pygmy Goat is genetically small, cobby, and compact. Its frame is clearly defined and well angulated; limbs and head are short relative to body length. Full barrelled and well muscled, the body circumference in relation to height and weight is proportionately greater than that of other breeds. The Pygmy goat is hardy ,, alert and very animated, good natured and gregarious!!

Pygmy Goats are silly,, comical animals!

HOUSING YOUR GOAT!

Fence your goats properly, and be sure you have a good latch on the outside of the gate. Provide shade in the summer. They also need a dry clean place to sleep, eat and excercise. Always remember goats HATE rain!

FEEDING YOUR GOAT!

Basically, Pygmy goats can live quite well on good fine grass hay and some grain each day. In the summer, if they have browse available, they will eat less hay- but we always have hay available to them. Fresh clean water must always be accesible. Scrub the water buckets frequently to avoid scum build up. Rations differ for Bucks, Does and Wethers! Your bucks and wethers must be fed carefully, as too not "overgrain" them, they may develop urinary stones. Make sure you balance the ration for calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and protein for bucks and wethers,, however if your bucks are being used for breeding, they will need a little extra food as they burn up more fuel. Dry does can also be fed the same, however pregnant does need at least a 16% protein food.

New "kid" on the page!!

BREEDING/KIDDING

Keep a breeding record on every doe. Does are usually bred anytime after 1 year of age. The normal breeding season for the pygmy goat is from late August to mid March. Estrus cycles normally last 2-3 days in the doe. The gestation period, the period from breeding to kidding. Normally, this period is from 145 to 155 days. It is very common for a doe to have 2 or more kids. The udder usually will contain milk several days to a week or more before kidding. Make sure you have a clean, dry, disinfected kidding pen available several days before delivery. Signs of kidding include, uneasiness, bleating, and pawing at the bedding. Best advice, be present during kidding!

NO COWS ALOUD!!

GROOMING/HOOF CARE

Good grooming includes brushing with a stiff dog type brush. A bath during warm weather helps to control fleas and lice. Goats are very prone to lice! You can help to prevent infestation by worming with IVERMECTIN, which also kills the lice or using a commercial dust for lice. Goats hooves grow rapidly, if they become excessively bent or infected, they can even cripple your goat! We trim hooves about every 2 months here at our lil farm and I use small pruning shears and then plane them as well, the plane basically is used to make the hoof level,, a necessity in show goats!
